Biography
“These Children of Stone are so stupid! Guard all the plain on the borders of their territory but always forget patrolling the forest? They don’t deserve the riches in their hoard if they neglect to protect them!”
Thus thought Olvarynn, the infamous pearlcatcher thief, when he stepped his foot into the dense forest at the edge of the territory which for some reason was not guarded as fervently as the other parts of the vast lands belonging to the large clan.
He is starting to think that he might have made a mistake.
Wait, hasn’t he passed this tree already?..
The forest can’t be that big. He’s been wandering for hours, he was supposed to exit it by night, yet the stars are twinkling merrily above his head and the trees seem even denser than before, no way he could fly up and leave anymore. Olvarynn shivers for some reason and moves further, to the small clearing covered with soft-looking moss, a few glowing flowers scattered around. They’re tiny but the aroma is so sweet, would be nice to rest nearby. He sighs and lies down, deciding to await the dawn to see where he needs to go, it’s impossible to navigate in the darkness for him as he’s not from Shadow.
He blinks slowly, sleep overcoming him, mesmerized by tiny blooms slowly moving in the wind. Something is not right, but he can’t see or smell anything except the heady, thick smell of the flowers…
He suddenly tenses.
There is no wind. The air is still and unmoving… unlike the flowers. They are closer than they were, too.
Suddenly gripped by panic, Olvarynn tries to stand. The whole ground suddenly raises, pebbles bursting everywhere, and the flowers, moss and ground lunge at him. At the last moment he sees a maw filled with several rows of sharp teeth among the plants and debris, and screams, but the sound dies down together with him when his throat is ripped out in one savage, powerful bite.
---
“Khai.” Saar doesn’t raise his voice as he knows that the spirit will hear him anywhere in the forest.
“Leader,” he hears a mocking whisper somewhere behind. He refuses to be intimidated, though. It’s his land, and while he tolerates the spirit as he doesn’t harm the clanmates, the moment Khai attacks one of the Children, he will be crushed mercilessly, spirit or no.
“There are rumors that a thief was to try stealing from us. He hasn’t been seen in a week. Know anything about it?”
“Hm. Possibly?” The sounds comes from above, soft and uncaring.
“Pearlcatcher, male. Vipera marks, dark blue, shimmering wings.”
“Aah, shimmering wings. Nice. Crunchy.” Saar looks down, as the sound comes from there.
Khai smiles and rolls onto his back, showing his belly and totally uncaring over displaying the common sign of submission. Saar knows perfectly that it’s not. The spirit, looking like a spiral dragon this time, holds a picked-round pearlcatcher skull in his hands; some meat still clings to the bones in the hollows. It reeks of carrion.
“He wasn’t one of yours, Leader,” reminds Khai in a sweet whisper. Always whisper, his real voice is a screech so powerful it bursts the eardrums and causes tremendous headache. “He wanted to attack and steal. He will not do that anymore.”
Saar sighs, and nods, accepting his point. “Can I take the skull to return to his clan? I will say that the beastclans got him.”
Khai picks the small slice of remaining meat from the skull and gulps it, then drops the skull on the ground.
“Whatever. I’m finished with it anyway.” He smiles – teeth, so many teeth, no spiral has that many – and sinks into the ground, disappearing without a trace.
Saar picks the skull, ignoring the stench of rot, and leaves the forest. He rarely questions his decisions, but he is still unsure about allowing Khai to stay. The spirit is too dangerous and unpredictable, but seems to keep his word and so far he hasn’t harmed anyone from the clan, and even took Aconite as some sort of a mate.
Saar prays that Khai stays benevolent to the clan. He might have allowed him to stay, but the truth is… he has no idea if the spirit could be killed, if it becomes necessary.
