Biography

     Calill the First-Class Mage

━━ story ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
“Yes.” The Guardian, named Ček, painstakingly took down her name, spelling it as he went. “C-a-l-i-l-l. Right? And you are a...?”

“I’m a first-class mage.”

“A what, now?” Ček’s pen hesitated, pooling ink on his parchment before he realized and lifted it.

Calill sighed and repeated herself, though Ček seemed none-too-impressed with the title. Another nearby Guardian even laughed at her self-description. The rest of the dragons he was standing with had the good sense to keep their disbelief to themselves.

She whipped around to face him. “It’s not my fault the Arcanist saw fit to put the abilities of three dragons into one.”

“Three dragons, hm?” The orange Guardian came closer, tail lashing.

For a moment, and just a moment, Calill felt intimidated by his size and mocking smile. She lifted her chin. “If you can find my equal, I’ll forfeit my fee.” She looked between Ček and the orange one. “I’m sure the general of your little army will be more than happy to have me, Sir…?”

The orange Guardian stood to his full height, dwarfing Calill’s small, but lithe Mirror frame. “Just Capricieux.” With that, he dropped his head more to her level. “And I’ll be surprised if you can magic your way past our Skydancer general.”

“But first,” Ček broke in, waving her back, “you do have to get past recruitment. Maybe a small demonstration of your abilities?”

“Aw, my dear...” Calill showed her teeth in a grin. “When it comes to my abilities, there’s no such thing as small.”

Exotic Arcanist Idol
Just like she says, Calill is a first-class mage. No one is quite sure how a Mirror got to be so good with her breath abilities, but it’s clear that she can take down even a Fae or a Tundra in a magical standoff. Maybe the Arcanist really did put the abilities of three dragons into “one, delectable package.” Of course, she also thinks herself quite beautiful for a Mirror, as well. In her early days of training, she built her own staff to channel her own breath abilities, and it doesn’t seem to work for any dragon but Calill. In addition, she’s been developing her own brand of Arcane magic that she calls “Stardust Magic.” She rarely gives demonstration for fear it will be stolen before she works out the imperfections. Though, of course, she doesn’t call them “imperfections.”

Unfortunately, Calill also seems to be highly aware of the fact that she really has no equal, most definitely not among Mirrors. And, since friends are typically peers… Calill doesn’t have many, if any. She has a certain number of students, and a large number of colleagues, but no friends. She gets along well with Capricieux, her mate, a strong warrior that doesn’t use magic at all. Calill attributes this to his not feeling threatened by her superiority in magic, because he doesn’t use his magic much at all. Capricieux tends to think it’s because Calill doesn’t feel threatened by his use of magic. In fact, it seems as if all of Calill’s friends are those that do not use magic at all. It’s just as well, since Calill makes a wonderful partner in skirmishes for her melee-fighter friends.

For a non-Pearlcatcher, Calill is exceedingly proud. But for an Arcane dragon, Calill possesses a higher-than-average interest in magic, probably because she’s so naturally good at it. Like her Arcane cousins, and the god himself, she finds plenty of joy in discovering new ways to use her magic, and she’s certainly not above a good night of stargazing. She believes there are new magic techniques to find written up there, and she’ll tell anyone the Arcanist will see the Shade coming long before it ever returns. And if it does, they’ll be ready. And by that, she probably means she’ll be ready. Because she thinks could probably take it on herself.

Calill doesn’t have many friends, maybe because she’s more proud than the average Pearlcatcher. Still, she’s amassed quite the pile of gold from her fee as a first-class mage for hire, and that may be all the friend she needs. She doesn’t generally have a problem getting hired, but she does take it as a personal insult if she’s not hired and will sometimes work for free to prove she’s worth it. On the other hand, she may be very lonely, and no one would ever be able to tell. Treasure can’t talk like friends do. And, no matter what they tell you, there are some things that treasure just can't buy.

━━ trivia ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
» Calill’s surname is Magicbrand.
»
» Calill has a soft spot in her heart for hatchlings. She will teach any hatchling that shows the meanest aptitude in magic: the meaner, the better, in fact. She’s made a near-master even out of those others thought wouldn’t amount to much.

aesthetic: Calill loves the color pink and anything made of gold. Dresses in the best silk and armor money can buy, sometimes with lines of coins attached for maximum glinting.
likes: magic, dutiful and adoring students, a strong dragon to stand between her and danger
dislikes: challenges to her superiority, not taking magic seriously
