He was a child of the unknown
So no one dared take him in
They feared the strangeness of which he came from
And the magic he held within

He was a child of the unknown
He wished he knew why they stayed away
All he knew was they left him alone
Day after night, night after day

So he came to build things
If it meant he'd have something to do
He learned how to fix things
So he could ignore his own rue

Perhaps if he was useful
They'd give him just a chance
To accept him as he was and more
Instead of discarding him at first glance

Amber lacquer, tools, and springs
If he was useful, could he be something?
Hammer, anvil, roaring flames
Where he came from wasn't his fault to blame.

He worked till his eyes filled with tears
Yet why did they still look at him with gazes that feared?
Was his smile not enough to invite?
How could they judge him by his birthplace - how was that their right?

Metal bolts and silver splice
Why did they still treat him with hearts of ice?
Golden linings and singing machines
What was it like to have a friend, what did it mean?

Finally, tired, he sank to the ground
Truly, there was no kindness to be found
There was something different about him, he knew
It was why his companions were less than few

So why did he work so hard, for something he'd never gain?
Why did he try to act normal, why must he suffer through the pain?
Was he just foolish, or foolhardy with hope?
Or was loneliness just too much for him to cope?

Tear-filled eyes and broken heart
He was left in despair and in the dark
He thought to die, but then heard something.
A creak? No, a soft whirring.

A tiny bird with metal wings
A failed creation of his own, but still something
As it fluttered about and brushed against his scales
He suddenly realized - he'd yet to fail.

They'd ignored him and pushed him to the side
Yet he knew he wasn't broken, deep inside
Even as he worked, he never tried to hide
And with that realization, his tears dried

For you're never truly by yourself
No matter where you go
Before looking for a best friend
You should realize you're your own

So even as others ignore him
He no longer feels quite alone
For sometimes, before seeking the company of others
You should first seek your own.
