Basalt was born and raised in the depths of the Tangled Wood, in all its murky glory. He can navigate in very poor-visibility conditions because of this, including absolute darkness. Living in mists and darkness honed his senses and patience. But more than that, they honed his passion for playing--but more importantly, winning--games.

The moment he first met the HAL 9000 A.I. that Urbana has spent so much time creating, he immediately began teaching it how to play chess. He spends an inordinate amount of time with the A.I. So far, Urbana has been there to supervise in one way or another, but she can't always be there forever. Basalt can wait as long as it takes, disguising his dangerous grin as one of delight.

The Shadow flight aren't evil, after all. They're just tricksters.
