Originally, it was... nothing. Not a dragon. Not even a sentient being, or a form, or a body. It was nothingness that slipped through the cracks in reality, draped with cloying void and the frustrating absence of life. There were very few memories it had. The empty bite of cold, ice shattered like glittering glass. The low, mournful howl of a drifting mass concealed against the black sky. A million piercingly sightless eyes, forever poignantly watching. Forever apathetic. It was a lonely not-quite existence. But the constant monotony of nothing had to create something. Something had to change. To grow. The tension simply had... to... break.
And then it did. Whether it was the gods' will, or happenstance, or simply a sideways shift slipping through the grains of apathy into empathy, everything changed with little more fanfare than a simple snap. In place of void, great branching boughs loomed, blocking out the million sightless twinkles floating in a black sky no longer concealed. It pooled over itself, inky formless shapes tripping upon itself, smudging starburst patterns circling the dusky ground. B-dmp. B-dmp. B-dmp. It became aware of a noise, the rhythmic thumping of a war drum. Another being - one of form and shape and life. Shaking claws covered fearfully bared teeth hidden under a tattered hood. B-dmp. B-dmp. B-dmp. The figure let out a shaky breath. A mistake. A deep tremble rolled through the formless mass, and suddenly all it could feel was cold, sharp fury, the cruelness of apathy left on the ground like a shattered mask. It focused. It tensed. It lunged.

There was something distinctly off about the creature that the clan found in the woods. In the dawn they found it - shambling on shaky feet, covered in tattered rags, thin wings dragging on the ground. It looked like an imperial - but off. It's teeth were too long, eyes too pale and unfocused - the proportions of it's serpentine body all wrong. A swaying, dismal looking lantern floated by it's face, string wrapped loosely about coiled antlers. But a dragon was a dragon, and this one seemed lost and frazzled, so they offered to bring the creature home. Diplomacy was, of course, met with teeth and claws and a sort of feral anger. But the off-imperial followed them anyway, like a slinking beast sniffing for scraps.
Things were okay for a while. The feral creature not quite an imperial stayed to the outskirts of the clan's village, skulking in the edges of the woods like a violent shadow. It was no longer safe to leave the village at night for the beast's wrath, however. Anyone who left the boundaries of the clan was a victim of the off-imperial's claws. Life continued much like this for some time, until the beast had what could be called... a change of heart.
At first glance - at many glances - the situation was absolutely dire. It was a cruel thunderstorm, a rarity in the Tangled Wood. Nobody wanted to be outside. Even wind-aligned dragons wouldn't stretch their wings, for fear that the screaming lightning would shoot them from the sky. Even the beast did not want to be out in the open during the storm - and so, this is when the not-imperial slunk into the hatchling den, bolstered by the darkness granted by swollen storm clouds.
The clan was alarmed, and fearful. This monster they had allowed into their midst was formidable, feral, and attacked any who even approached it. And now, before anyone could even think, even stop it - the hatchlings... Terrified, the warriors of the clan braved the storm, charging the den, only to find -
The beast was prone on the ground, sprawled and flattened, and was covered in joyful children.
"They are the Lord of the Mountain!" the hatchlings proclaimed. "A faerie dragon king lost in the storm!"
And so, coarse mane braided with flowers by little hands, Achalendra the creature became. The hatchlings give them form, and life. They give Achalendra an identity - taming the off-imperial down to something like a humbled cat; content to curl around the hatchlings that they care for, and frightfully protective towards any others that approach. There are few adult dragons that they tolerate - but the ones that they do, they consider a part of their brood. The hatchlings teach Achalendra is now the defacto guardian of the hatchlings and children of the clan. In return, the hatchlings - and the adults that Achalendra tolerates - teach them what it means to act, to look, and to be draconian - one day at a time.
