The wagon bounced along the dirt road, jostling violently whenever one of the wheels hit a large rock in the path. Inside the wagon, crates of all sizes were stacked on top of one another lining the walls, leaving only a small sliver of space in the middle of the wagon. In a wooden crate at the bottom of one of the many stacks was a small dragon, curled tightly in a ball, her tiny claws digging into the bottom of her crate in an attempt to keep from sliding around as the wagon teetered along. It was hot and stuffy in the wagon, and the little dragon in her crate wondered if they were ever going to stop…

She didn’t remember much about where she came from. There were vague memories of a cozy nest, the sound of waves, and the feeling of soft sand under her feet, but these memories only came to her in her dreams. Her waking hours were filled with the stuffy air of the wagon and the smells of the other dragons and creatures in the cages around her. Most of them were too tired to converse with one another, and even if they wanted to, most of them spoke different languages and couldn’t understand each other. The last time the wagon had stopped, however, the merchant who owned the wagon and everything inside had brought a shiny new cage on board. It was sitting directly across from the female Bogsneak clinging desperately to the bottom of her cage. In the shadowy darkness of the caravan, it was difficult to see the creature inside the cage, but for lack of something better to do, she decided to try to communicate with it.

“Psst…. hey… hey can you understand me?” She whispered, hoping the merchant driving the caravan wouldn’t hear her.

The little Bogsneak waited, but there was no response from the cage across from her. She crawled to the edge of her crate to see if she could glimpse whatever was lurking inside, but the wagon interior was too dark. After waiting what seemed like hours, the little female eventually drifted off to sleep. In her dreams, she imagined a pair of light green eyes peering at her from behind the bars of that shiny cage.

The Bogsneak awoke to the sound of the wagon door creaking open, and sunlight flooding into the interior. The air was dry and smelled of rich spices and cooking meat. The little dragon had never smelled such complex aromas and hoped that the merchant would choose her to take outside to the market today. To her joy, he did, and she held her breath as her cage was carried out of the caravan and placed on a lavish rug. As her eyes adjusted to the bright light, the Bogsneak took in the sights around her. She was in the middle of a vast, bustling marketplace full of all kinds of creatures selling their wares and customers haggling for their purchases. Her attention was drawn away from the market around her as a second cage was placed next to her. She recognized it as the one sitting across from her in the wagon, and now, in the light of day, she could finally see what was inside. A fairly large Imperial male dragon sat on his hind legs, squinting his eyes against the glaring sun. When his eyes finally adjusted, he glanced around him and when his gaze finally met hers she noticed that his eyes were a piercing light green, just as in her dream. His scales were a beautiful pearl color that gleamed in the sunlight, not unlike her own skin.

Suddenly, a shadow fell across the front of her cage, and the Bogsneak averted her attention from the Imperial to take in the dragon now standing in front of her. She was a beautiful adult Pearlcatcher, with a purple body and wings and sandy-colored legs.

The Pearlcatcher exchanged a few words and a large bag of coins with the merchant and then the Bogsneak’s cage was opened. She stretched her legs and watched in awe as the Pearlcatcher went around to every cage and opened them all, declaring that every creature was free to go where they wished and do what they wanted. She also offered a place in her clan for anyone who wished it. A clan where every dragon and familiar was valued regardless of their background or talents, and where no one was forced to work, but everyone contributed equally to the survival of the clan. The little Bogsneak decided she would follow the Pearlcatcher and become a part of her clan. The Imperial next to her likewise agreed. The Pearlcatcher then explained that her name was Bermuda, and asked both dragons what they would prefer to be called. The Bogsneak replied that she had never had a name before, or if she was given one, no longer remembered it. Bermuda gave her a knowing smile and asked if it would be alright if she gave the Bogsneak a name.

And that was how Ayaka received not only her name, but also her home. On that day long ago, she, and countless others, including her mate Pearly, were rescued by Bermuda and became a part of her clan. Since then, Ayaka and Pearly have traveled the world together, acting as clan ambassadors and offering hope to dragons in oppressive circumstances. They have dedicated their lives to freeing all creatures from a life of captivity. Thanks to their efforts, the black market for selling dragons and other creatures was shut down, and countless dragons have been granted the opportunity to find a place that they too could call home.
