Biography

The Harvester.

THEME

Gravestones jutted from the blackened, ashy ground like cracked, greying teeth. Kelud walked among them, and every step sent up a puff of ash and detritus. He looked like he belonged among these monuments to death; Akemi told him once that he really leaned into the role of undertaker, and then she’d grinned and laughed. Kelud still wasn’t sure what she had found so funny about that.

The graveyard was backed up onto a slow-moving lava flow. A tall, narrow, bridge crossed the channel, its underside blackened by the heat coming from below it. The bridge, and what lay on the other side, was Kelud’s destination. With every step towards the flow, the temperature increased. Kelud was used to this heat by this point in his life. He had a lot of business in the graveyard.

Kelud paused at some of the headstones to brush the ash from them as he walked. At this point, the white marble on almost every headstone was stained grey. Only the most recently buried still had pure white markers.

At last, Kelud reached the lava flow. He paused at the foot of the bridge and turned back to the graveyard, passing his eyes over this testament to the passage of time. He had personally buried nearly every body here. The thought might disturb some, but Kelud felt a kind of closeness to the fallen, even the ones he hadn’t been friends with in life. He prepared them for their final journey. He smiled to himself. If he tried, he could name each and every dragon buried here.

Though Kelud didn’t wish death upon anyone, he preferred the company of the dead. They didn’t interrupt his thoughts with mindless chatter. This wasn’t to say he didn’t like to listen to other dragons talk, of course. His only real friend was quite a chatterbox, and he enjoyed their incredibly one-sided conversations.

Kelud turned away from the graveyard and crossed the bridge, headed for his destination: the mausoleum. It was a large, intricately carved building that was, like the headstones, white when it was originally built. Now it was a dark grey thing standing forlornly in the glow of the lava flow. The orange light cast a sinister look upon it, throwing its corners and edges into stark relief with deep, impenetrable shadows. There was no one yet in the mausoleum, but it had been built along with their original settlement to house the council when they passed on. Kelud entered the building and slid his hood from his head. It pooled around his shoulders, and his steps echoed in the vaulted marble ceiling.

He smiled at the dusty walls and empty sarcophagi. This place had developed into something of a sanctuary for Kelud. He could sit in the doorway and watch the lava flow steadily down the sides of the volcano, under the bridge, and curve into the distance. The lava lit the cloud of ash that billowed from the volcano, and it was pleasant to imagine a kind of flight that took to little effort. He dreamed of simply floating through the air like that, carried by the gusts and breezes, at the whims of Windsinger.

His tail trailed through the thick carpet of dust as he turned back around to sit in the mouth of the mausoleum. He watched the ash billow, and watched the lava flow, and enjoyed the complete solitude and silence.

The sweet sound of silence is bliss
Just me
And them...
Like ivy creeping over
high stone cliffs
Walk slowly, tred carefully
Least you disturb their place
I can't hear them, but I can imagine them
Every dragon who left and
never returned
Here is where all is peaceful
No more stress
Just the slow, slow passing of time
The ash settles on ghostly marble
But never erasing those names
Set in stone
A respite from the many worries of
life
When you're ready to make one last journey
I'll be there to gather up your belongings
Pack the traveller's bag
Bring your friends together for one
last farewell
And then
I'll take you
And be there
One last face
Close the doors behind you
Before you leave
Forever
Into the unknown...
