The embodiment of desires

Three small hatchlings, barely large enough to be seen, sat by the large gate that served as an entrance to the large lair. Each hatchling stared out the gate wistfully.

"Repitor, what do you think is out there?" a small Fae whispered, turning to the Imperial next to her. "Maybe a harpy with razor-sharp talons, waiting to carve us up!" the Imperial yelled, jumping up and pressing his snout against the gate, his antlers clanging against the bars of the gate. The Fae slowly backed away, her crests fluttering.

"Oh come on Julissa, I was just teasing! You don't have to be scared. There's nothing out there but what the Plaguemother made," Repitor said, letting out an exasperated sigh.

"Do you think we'll ever get to leave? I don't like being stuck in this cave all the time, I want to go outside and see what the world is like," she said, sitting down and folding her wings around herself like a cocoon. The third hatchling turned to them, eyes bright with excitement. "We could find a strong adult to protect us so we could go outside! We can't go out alone, but I bet somebody older would protect us!" he squeaked out.

Repitor grinned and started to look around, trying to find somebody that looked like they would be nice. Nobody he saw fit that description, and he frowned. "But Maliok... there's no adults around here that would let us go outside." he pointed out and flopped to the ground. Maliok sighed and walked away, disappearing around the corner. Repitor and Julissa watched him leave, debating with each other about if they should follow him.

"Guys! Come here!" Maliok suddenly yelled out. The other two hatchlings hastily ran around the corner, barely able to scramble over the logs on the ground. When they found Maliok, they glared at him. "That's not an adult you dummy, that's a painting of a wildclaw! It couldn't protect us!" Repitor said, his tone a mixture of exasperation and amusement. Maliok moved his gaze down to his feet as he shuffled them in the dirt. "Yeah.. But.. It looks like it could. It looks strong and nice and like it would protect us."

All three sighed and sat down, staring at the fairly life-like painting in front of them. Silence filled the air. Hours passed, and they merely stared, watching the painting.

Julissa sighed when the sky began to darken. "I wish he were real," was all she said before she got up and walked into the Cave.

The other two hatchlings sat there for a moment longer before they both went into the Cave after her, their minds filled with the desire to roam freely.

tumblr_inline_o4vtikEDrW1soemy4_250.png Years passed and the hatchlings grew, but never managed to get out of the Cave. Instead, they stared at that painting until the dark, blood red had faded to a lighter shade of red with pink areas near the bottom.

"Repitor, we're never going to get out of here," Julissa said, her crests drooping. He turned his head to look at her, eyes bright with determination. "Yes we will. You'll see. One day we'll get out of here. We have to."

Maliok looked at both of them, slowly edging towards the painting. While the two other dragons were speaking amongst themselves, he laid a sliver of raw meat, slick with blood, at the base of the wall. "I wish you were real. You're all we've had for so long, the only hope we've had." He then left, head bowed.
The other two hatchlings followed him soon enough, leaving the small clearing they'd made so long ago empty.
A ground-shaking crash sounded in the middle of the night, jarring the hatchlings from their dreams of adventures. They each looked around as much as they could in the dark, but nothing alerting showed itself. None of the other dragons had woken up, or seemed to have noticed at all. The trio crept towards the mouth of the Cave, trying to be as quiet as possible and navigate in the dark at the same time. Snouts were bruised and tails were stepped on, but they made it outside with no problems. Each hatchling was shivering, despite it not being the least bit chilly.

A rustling noise came from around the corner they had gone around so many times. The hatchlings turned frightened glances on each other and warily stepped to the edge of the corner. They peaked around it, sure that they'd find a Serthis, or maybe even a Centaur, waiting to grab them or hurt them. Three pairs of frightened eyes quickly turned into horrified gazes as they saw the painting on the wall bulging slightly, and the painting looked as if it had been painted with fresh colours. Repitor let out a terrified shriek and his behind Maliok, who had hidden behind Julissa. She slowly inched forward, seeming mesmerized as the painting continued to pull itself from the wall. Her heart racing, she forced herself to step closer. Each step felt like she was trying to move through liquid amber. The thing that had once been the painting they had loved for so long finally fell from the wall and collapsed into an inelegant heap. The two other hatchlings came to stand next to her, both of them teetering on their feet. "The painting is gone," whispered Maliok. "And so is the meat I left before sundown!"

The creature lifted its head, and in the dim moonlight they could see the that the colours of this creature were nearly an exact match for that of the painting, if only a bit lighter. The hatchlings backed away slowly, which caused Repitor to trip and get his antlers stuck in a log. "Get me out! Don't break my antlers!" he squeaked out, his voice high with panic. They all froze as the creature whipped its head in their direction. Julissa began to tug frantically at the log, trying to break the wood. Maliok stood in front of them both, his large body easily blocking the line of sight. His legs trembled, and his voice was higher than normal. "You can't hurt them! Stay away! Just go away!" he shouted.

The creature blinked at him. It seemed confused, and the voice it spoke with sounded as if it didn't quite understand how to work its tongue. "Why would I want to hurt anybody? I’ve been watching you for years.”

Days passed, and the hatchlings slowly accepted that this creature, who they’d decided to name Desire, was truly their painting they had loved for so long. Repitor had cried for an hour, while Julissa had interrogated Desire until her head swam. Maliok sat through the whole interrogation, ready to attack. Desire sat through it all, barely managing to answer the questions. But eventually she answered to their satisfaction, and they led her around the Cave, showing her the different rooms and the entrances and exits. She learned at a fast pace, impressing the hatchlings when she managed to find her way outside on her own. They found her asleep next to the wall she’d come from. They watched her sleep for long moments before eventually began to speak.
“There’s another.. Thing.. Like her. The younger hatchlings are in an uproar about it!” Maliok whispered.
“Yeah, I think Bhavith said something about that! Some toy coming to life. I think they named him Dream,” Julissa muttered skeptically.
“Maybe we should take her to meet them! They’ve been here a few weeks, I think. They’ll know how to help!”
The next morning, the hatchlings told stories of their “adventures” to Desire, who listened with wide eyes. Her eagerness soared to new heights, until she was begging them to take her on an adventure. The hatchlings, looking at each other with the eyes of a cornered stag, eventually came up with a lie. “We- we can’t! It’s not safe, and you’re still new. You’d get hurt if we took you out there!”

Desire sulked for the rest of the day, and the hatchlings began to feel guilty.
“Maybe we should just take her to the Coatl that’s like her. I heard his name is Dream.”
“I guess. But do you think she can handle it?”
“Better than she handled not going on an adventure, at least.”
With grim determination, they took Desire back into the Cave. “We’re going to the hatchery, Desire. There’s somebody there we want you to meet!” Julissa exclaimed. Desire followed with eagerness, not showing a shred of the sadness or confusion she’d experienced earlier.

They trekked through the labyrinth-like tunnels, eventually making it to the hatchery. Once there, they saw a male Coatl entertaining the young hatchlings with silly buzzing and humming noises. The young hatchlings were scrambling over one another, trying to get a better view of Dream. The group waited until the fresh hatchlings had worn themselves out before they approached Dream. “Sir, our friend here is- She’s like you. We thought that you two could be friends…” Julissa trailed off, staring at the Coatl with large, pleading eyes.

Dream smiled at her, patted her on the head, and turned to Desire. Desire promptly tripped over a hatchling toy and landed at Dream’s feet, causing him to smile.
“Still getting used to your legs, I imagine?” he asked her, helping her up.
“Yeah, stupid things won’t work properly,” she muttered.
Dream snorted at her comment and motioned to a far corner that was free of hatchlings.

The hatchlings left, leaving Dream and Desire alone. Dream led her to the far corner with a faint smile.
“So, do you remember how you became a dragon?” he asked.
“No, I didn’t exist, and then I did,” she said warily.
“Alright, I guess that makes sense. I used to be.. Something. Not quite sure. Maybe something.”
“I was a painting. Those hatchlings always watched me.”
“Do you know why you’re a Wildclaw?”
“What’s a Wildclaw?”
Dream chuckled and sat down on a chair, motioning her towards another chair. “I believe you have much to learn, and we have much to discuss.”
