It is rare to say that a dragon must be made of sugar, spice, and everything nice, but lo and behold, Roana could not possibly be made of anything else. Impossibly sweet, she spends her days at the Cove Inn as the resident pastry chef, a baker to be surpassed by no other. She knows her cookies and cakes, her pastries and pies, her tarts and treats. Candy is no trouble, frosting is a breeze. Somehow, even lemonade falls within her realm of expertise, the perfect drink to accompany her confections, or just a refreshing relief to resort-goers staying at the Inn.
The popular rumor is that she has been trained by the greatest pastry chefs alive. It certainly has traction, carried as it is by almost all of the Cove Inn’s patrons to distant lands. Anyone who has sampled her desserts would believe it. But anyone who has truly savored the sweets she puts before them would know the truth: only witchcraft could possibly bring something so incredible into existence.
And it is true. Roana is a witch, and one of the rare witches of Nyx Coven who did not discover her magic through a brush with death. Against all odds, she nurtured it into being, coaxed it to life. The smell of freshly baked bread kindled a warmth in her heart that drew her magic forth, and the diligence of her art only kept the stream steady and sweet. Her skill comes more from passion than the magic, which is more of a cherry on top than anything else. Even without her enchanted techniques, she would be a fine baker, worthy of the greatest praise.
With or without her magic, she knows that praise doesn’t matter. No matter what, in any version of her life, Roana would find herself again and again covered in flour and sugar and all the other ingredients she needs every day. It’s a way of life, one dear to her heart, one she could never imagine giving up. She loves to see the smiles on dragons’ faces when they realize her cupcakes really are that good, and she loves to hear the delight in hatchlings’ voices when their parents agree to order a dessert to share.
And if she’s being honest, at her end of the day, she loves being able to eat some of the leftover stock. It’s just so sweet.
