Biography

Blurb from the inspired Lightshadow101: wrote:
You see, fire and plants don't mix well. That's common sense. Everyone looks weirdly at me.

I caused the Firefall.

I can't fit in.

They say I can't

I think they're right.

But I can prove them wrong. Even though every time I flap my wings, embers fly and dragons get scared. I can fit in. Even though they say I can't. I can. I'll show them, and finally they'll accept me.

Quote:
Sooty's egg may have crashed to earth in a disastrous fashion, but that didn't mean he stayed unloved for long. Requiem and her hollow-eyed partner Dirge were lightning-fast- almost unseemly in their eagerness- to adopt Sooty and claim him as their own. He considers them to be his foster parents, but does not forget his true origins as a falling star, and the way he was created from fire and magic in a ritual older than the Gladekeeper Herself. He worries that this might mean he is shade-touched, and so he conscientiously plays along with his foster mother's doting affections even though it feels a trifle forced, because he is desperate to fit in, desperate to be a good dragon. He is always terrified by his own strength, and ever fearful that he could somehow be manipulated against his will, and made to destroy Oakheart. Again.
Atala (The self-proclaimed King of the Oakheart Fae) wasn't sure what to do about the parentless meteorite child, whose coming set fire to half the forest, so he judged Sooty guilty of multiple accounts of vandalism by fire and destruction of property, also reckless endangerment, but in light of the facts (he was an egg at the time, therefore not culpable) Atala instead sentenced him to lifelong community service. Sooty has remarked that it's as good a calling as any, and is happy to oblige by serving his community and his King in any way he can.
Sooty likes buffing the King's crown until it shines- and got caught puffing a bright ring of magic fire onto its surface just to give it that extra sparkle. Instead of reporting him, Warforge (the clans' armoursmith) gave him a day job of being a draconic bellows and forge-fire keeper, a job to which he is incredibly suited, since he can preternaturally tell whenever a fire is nearby and when it needs tending. He loves his work, and would live out his days happily staring into the heart of flames if he could. It makes him feel at home more than any foster family ever could.
Sooty and his Shadow wrote:
Sooty is mystified by Requiem's complete and absolute devotion to him; she has other children- real ones, blood related ones, that she hatched herself, not just strange parentless hatchlings that fell out of the sky! He can only assume that the otherwise intelligent fae has a huge blind spot with regard to him- maybe her dedication is because she mistakes him for someone else. Someone she lost.

Or else she was dropped on her head at some point in hatchlinghood. Whatever the case, Sooty is far too polite to argue if Requiem insists on showering her 'favourite son' with every luxury known to Fae- treats, gifts, surprises. He tries valiantly to be a good 'son', but her attentiveness borders on paranoia- like a brightly coloured shadow, always in his wake, hanging around the forge at odd times with no convincing reason for being there. Almost like she's checking up on him, he feels even more self-conscious, worried that she doesn't trust him not to manifest fire again and devastate the forest or something. She's promised she doesn't blame him for the Firefall, he was a victim of circumstance, but she looks oddly guilty whenever she says that, so Sooty doesn't know what to think.
Despite Tara's teasing, Sooty feels sure it isn't just her living vicariously through him- there isn't pride, exactly, when she looks at him, and that makes him sad. Requiem always has overbright eyes when she gazes at her adopted child; her voice trembles, sad and uncertain; her hands shake when she offers him her specially brewed afternoon tea for the thousandth time. Sooty is grateful, and appreciates an adopted mother so devoted and loyal, but it does seem a little strange, even to him. After all, he couldn't possibly suspect the truth. That she hopes he might someday look at her, and remember another life.

Bio by Disillusionist!
He was not even hatched yet, but what explosive power! —The harpies dropped his egg from the sky. It burned white-hot as it smashed into the forest.

The dragons of the Oakheart Clan awakened immediately. They cried out in dismay as they beheld the tsunami of fire bearing down on them. They could do nothing against this disaster, for it was a curse engineered by the harpies, fused with the innate power of the Fire egg. A curse of fire, destruction, and death.

They couldn’t break this curse. In despair, they prepared to abandon their home to the raging flames. Other dragons in the vicinity fled. Only one hesitated.

Her name was Tara. She had come to this forest in search of a better life and had found only loss and flames. Yet she was not afraid. A curse? As a child, she had enjoyed solving puzzles—and what was a curse but a magical puzzle? She turned towards the fire....

The Oakheart dragons soon felt a cool breeze pushing the flames back, covering them like a sheet. Slowly, the fire surrendered.

They found Tara near the Heart Oak. She didn’t hear their thanks at first. She was riveted on the egg before her. It was beginning to hatch.

They initially thought he was a demon. He had a dragon’s shape—but he was wrought of living fire! “Sooty,” they dubbed him, choosing a name that sounded cute and harmless. He was anything but.

He retained the explosive powers that had nearly killed the forest. Flames burst from his wings; his skin was actual lava. Yet for all his danger, he was still a child, curious and sweet. He fed on tinder and learned to appreciate the dragons who brought him fuel. He noticed how they built small fires; he could do that, too!

He often caused minor disasters, and the gifts he ignited were quickly doused. The adults looked upon him with fearful eyes.

“You fell from the sky,” Tara told him. She had found a home with the grateful clan after she’d saved them, and she told Sooty this story, explaining why he was so feared. The Fae’s eyes widened as he realized he had nearly extinguished his clan—even before his birth!

“I wouldn’t do that now,” he peeped. Tara nodded approvingly. “We know, but others are wary—after all, you very nearly did just that. But I believe you.” She smiled. “Take it from me—how we’re born doesn’t decide who or what we become.”

Sooty knew that Tara was supposed to have been a witch but had instead become a curse-breaker—and a powerful one, too. Perhaps someday, he would be as great as she was! He, too, would be a helpful dragon, one his clan would be proud of....

He’d scorched the forest, but already there was new growth. Seeds awakened by the fire. Sooty watched them sprout, and he smiled. He had been born as a curse....But he could yet become a blessing to his clan.
