Biography
Stormlight
One should learn even from one's enemies.
Stormlight looked at the smoke rising into the cool night air. He could see the light of the funeral pyre through the trees, but he couldn’t muster up the strength to join the others in their mourning. He was a formidable warrior, a proud descendant of one of Sornieth’ oldest bloodlines but last night, all his skills and experience hadn’t been enough. He had failed. Again. There was no comfort in the thought that the failure hadn’t been his alone as Lugaidh, their most senior fighter and Anatolia, more a healer than a warrior but also a capable fighter, had been there, too. But still, it hadn’t been enough. They had lost the young eager Coatl Balthasar to the strange beast prowling the shadows on the outskirts of their territory and their apprentice Strider was barely clinging to live. Gwyn had warned them, the two mages Aeneas and Accolon had warned them. There were forces at work you should not take lightly. But they had laughed. Surely, three fully trained and experienced Night Warriors had nothing to fear. And the two youngsters had been so keen to accompany them on their patrol. Their arrogance had taken the better of them, and two innocent young dragons had paid the price for their vanity. One was dead, the other one gravely injured and scarred for life should he survive. Stormlight clenched his teeth, fighting back tears. Why were it always the innocent who got hurt? When they returned, the cocky smile had disappeared from Lugaidh’s lips and Anatolia broke down in tears when Balthasar’s mother screamed in agony at the sight of her dead son. Stormlight had been glad that it fell to Lugaidh to report to Antafes what had happened. He couldn’t have done that. The memories were too horrible. That creature hunting them as if they were prey not predator, attacking from the shadows, somehow merging with them. Weaving in and out of their plane of reality. Ripping through their defenses, ripping through their flesh. He shuddered. And the worst thing was that it was still out there, somewhere. They hadn’t been able to defeat it but instead had to run back with their tails between their legs to the safety of the Sanctuary’s wards. Deep down he knew that this had been the logical thing to do, in fact the only thing they could do with two comrades down and being injured themselves. There had still been a chance they would all make it back alive. But in the end, they hadn’t. When the death songs began Stormlight retreated further back into the woods. He couldn’t bare those haunting chants full of grief and despair. Maybe he was a coward but he just couldn’t face Balthasar’s grief-stricken family. He should visit Strider but he didn’t think he could muster the strength to watch the young Night Watcher’s ragged and uneven breathing either. So, he went on deeper into the silent woods, his grief and guilt a burden he had to carry alone. There was only one way to lessen the weight of it, he thought. He would track down that horrid creature, and when he found it, he would make sure it suffered a fate direr than his innocent victims. A grim smile appeared upon his lips, it was time to hunt. |
