Biography

Marjoram
magical energy researcher / self-appointed station chef
Painted Clay Pot
Picked-Over Bones
Ancient Knife
Before taking this job, Marjoram worked as a ley line surveyor, and travelled all over Sornieth. She's always happy to share her experiences, but it's wiser not to ask, unless you want to be trapped in a 90-minute rant about her favourite dragon-friendly beastclan restaurants.

Dragons are, generally speaking, not known for their culinary arts - unsurprising, since half of them don't even have the taste buds to appreciate herbs and spices - but Marjoram was raised by her bogsneak father and taught to appreciate such things. So when she set out to make a name for herself, she was shocked when her peers and coworkers reacted to her enthusiasm with mild amusement, disgust, and - even worse - complete apathy.

She wasn't much of a cook at the time, though, and her father had also impressed upon her a certain respect for others' preferences, so there was nothing to be done. Nevertheless, when she saw a job listing for a position working under a tundra researcher, some part of her couldn't help but be optimistic. Surely an herbivore would be more understanding of her passion, right? She never liked the cold, but she could put up with a lot if it came with a work environment she could really be comfortable in.

Which is why when Merrill greeted her at the door, munching on a soylent energy bar, something inside her snapped.

It didn't matter if she had to learn from scratch, or if all she had access to were subpar ingredients, or if none of her coworkers appreciated her efforts. She was going to cook for them, and nothing on heaven or earth was going to stop her until these godsdamned carnivores admitted that food was worth cooking.
  • Relevant headcanon: carnivorous breeds like wildclaws and coatls have weaker senses of taste and so don't really cook, except when necessary to avoid disease. Their culinary arts focus more on visual presentation, which is why fancy food items like the Sparkling Reefprince are so highly prized
  • The other dragons at the station generally regard her aggressive enthusiasm fondly, and try her experiments if only to humour her. Keir, after decades of living and foraging alone in the brutal Southern Icefields, actually appreciates her services immensely but is not sure how to show it.
  • She's transgender; after she left home, she named herself after one of her favorite herbs. (Yes, she's an incorrigible nerd.)
