     Spjall the Lost Mind
to hide what is most important

Theme: After the Rain
              38867550.png
━━ story ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Spjall swept into the room, his ice-white prince’s crown on his head. All of his attire was spotless and white, not what one might expect of a prince of Shadow.

“Is this the dragon?” Spjall lowered his head near to the floor, where a dark Spiral laid helpless. A Guardian held him, though a spine broken in six places and two broken wings weren’t taking him anywhere. “Is this the infamous Deathward?”

At his name, the Spiral smiled. Spjall would soon take care of that. Pressing his palm to the Spiral’s forehead, he felt a shadow descend on the room. The Spiral convulsed and screamed, but it was over in a moment.

The Spiral turned his large, dark eyes up, and blinked. “Who are you?”

“Who are you?” Spjall returned the question. “Do you remember the insult you paid my family? What little trinkets did you sell our secrets for?”

The Spiral thought about it for a moment, his inhibitions as hidden from him as a desire to live. “Trinkets…” he mumbled. “No, it was mounds of treasure. A pile of gold for every little tale. More if the secrets were bigger.” There was a long pause, and Spjall thought he saw the tiniest bit of remorse. But no. A glint came into the Spiral’s eye. “Don’t think ill of me.”

Spjall gritted his teeth and turned to the Guardian. “No repentance, even now.” The Guardian lowered his head, a small grin edging out over his exposed teeth. “Give him to the Bramble.” With that, he looked back at the Spiral. “May the Shadowbinder reject you, and all other gods as well.”

One final sweep of Shadow magic, and the Spiral could remember nothing of consequence. He left the ability to breathe, but little else. He would be consumed by the Foxfire in mere hours. Spjall went back out into the corridor, his skin crawling. All the same, he savored the memory of the Spiral’s lost one, the thoughts and impressions he could hide. All in the name of family.

━━ history ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━

Spjall was born with incredible ability in a form of Shadow magic called eclipsing. Most know Shadow magic can enshroud the physical world in darkness, obscuring things once visible. Eclipsing is this ability, however it covers the mental field rather than the physical. Eclipsing is what many Shadow tricksters use to enhance illusions: a mark cannot figure out what they cannot notice. Spjall’s father favored him to eventually come into the position of Clan’s Eclipser. Spjall’s mother, however, favored his older brother Skjold. Though the two adults quarreled, the hatchlings got along well.

Spjall spent his early days at his father’s call, completing various tasks and ruining dragons that had harmed their family or the clan in any small way. Though other dragons might consider Spjall’s job distasteful, he found nothing too terrible in it. After all, he could even hide pain from a dragon if his father became too angry.

Terrible plans shattered any dreams Skjold and Spjall had for the future. Enlisting the help of a clan Eclipser, Spjall’s mother orchestrated his demise. An Eclipser hid Spjall’s memory from him. He could no longer access his magic, history━even his words were forgotten. In a fit of rage, Skjold took vengeance on the the betrayers, and robbed his mother of her history as she’d taken from Spjall. Though Skjold managed to take Spjall away from the clan of their hatching, he hasn’t found a cure or reversal for the curse that grips Spjall’s mind. Skjold remembers an eloquent, joking, sometimes annoying younger brother━a Spjall that no longer exists. Getting a job and traveling the world to search for the path to return his brother to normal, Spjall tags along. He has no choice; he couldn’t take care of himself even if the thought managed to cross his ruined mind.

Shadow, for better or worse, is Spjall’s life now. Some of Skjold’s colleagues in the Tempest Chase believe that Spjall may never return to his former self. Others hold out hope like Skjold. In the meantime, Spjall entertains himself, playing with shadows and helping the Chase with menial tasks when he understands what he’s being told. Mostly, he stays with Skjold. Perhaps because he knows, deep down, that Skjold has his own personal shadow darkening his days.

━━ familiar ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Since Skjold knew he couldn’t always be at Spjall’s side after the betrayal, he enlisted the help of a Moonlight Fungi he knew from the Tangled Wood. The old mushroom was not interested in the affairs of Skjold’s clan, though he was also not opposed to traveling a bit and earning coin along the way. Aki is a constant presence for Spjall, and therefore is comforting to him whenever Skjold goes away to earn their keep. Aki has amassed a small fortune in Skjold’s employ, and has been known to offer his unbiased wisdom to passing dragons that need him. He has nothing better to do.

━━ clan ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
12738.png Skjold is Spjall’s brother: an excellent fighter, a decent eclipser, and peerless in his lust for revenge. When they were younger, Spjall was a merciless bully to Skjold, knowing that Skjold would let him get away with murder if it came to it. Skjold is no less an unsavory killer, but at least Skjold isn’t pretty enough to hide it as Spjall always was. Truth be told, outside the confines of their clan, Skjold isn’t sure whether he wants the old Spjall back sometimes. They’d likely have to leave this home he’s made for them.

Even though Chenek is Spjall’s nephew, Spjall doesn’t know that. Chenek was hatched long after Spjall could hold on to any worthwhile memories. All the same, Chenek is around enough that Spjall is used to him and is somewhat distressed when he is gone. Spjall would likely not find Chenek all that palletable were he able to form any opinions. After all, Chenek is completely unlike Spjall ever was: quiet, lonely, sickly, and otherwise friendly. Spjall would most likely consider Chenek’s chosen trade of tanner beneath their family. 15579.png
10756.png When Luxury requested asylum among the Tempest Chase’s ranks, no one thought much of it… that is, until Luxury showed she could heal sick minds like Spjall’s. At least, that’s what it appeared to be. Spjall seems to be smitten with the Skydancer in a way that is only slightly troubling to his brother. He follows her everywhere and does her bidding without question. Spjall bristles at his brother’s rejection of his beloved, but probably doesn’t have the cognizance to understand what’s happened to him.

━━ notes ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
» Spjall shares his parents’ surname with his brother, Skjold: Cloudcover.
»
» As befitting a prince, Spjall is an incredibly picky eater. Not only does he only eat fish, but he only eats river fish. He believes they’re cleaner than the pond and sea varieties.

aesthetic: Spjall is a prince, and enjoys all the trappings that accompany it. However, when not possessed of his full faculties he couldn’t care less what he looks like.
likes: power, wealth, justification, large rooms, room to romp
dislikes: being ignored, being unable to find his brother or Aki
