Whirligig

Whirligig is an undeniable oddball, but he has such a bright, cheerful personality while genuinely caring about others that he ends up on everyone's good side. One source of Whirligig's joy is the elaborate body paint Nico maintains on his hide. He's exceptionally proud of the artwork and likes to refer to it as his "tattoo," though he also believes it makes him look intimidating. As a result he goes out of his way to be extra nice to unfamiliar dragons as a way of reassuring them that they have nothing to fear from him. It tends to be an unnecessary measure.

Nico has also shown him how to paint his own claws using a special kind of paint the tundra developed, something Whirligig delights in doing himself. Most of the time he keeps them a slightly different shade of purple, but he insists it adds an extra shine to them. Occasionally he'll switch to a blue or green when he feels like it, though.

Whirligig likes to see everyone as happy as he is and does what he can to make their days better, whether by helping with a tricky task or offering a smile and a merry greeting. Perhaps as a side effect, and much to the eternal chagrin of his fellow ridgeback Oasis, he's managed to completely misunderstand the fundamental concept of ridgeback borrowing: instead of constantly taking things without permission he frequently gives others gifts saying they can "borrow" it, fully expecting to never get the item back. The habit only serves to further endear him to others, though most of them remain somewhat bemused by the behavior.

Despite his normal bubbly demeanor, Whirligig seems innately aware of when his enthusiasm is unwanted to someone going through a tough time and will instinctively rein it in around them. Instead he'll adopt a more subdued attitude and offer whatever quiet emotional support he can, even if all that amounts to is curling up and staying with them in silent companionship as reassurance that they're not alone.
