Biography
Con Man - Hypnotist - Treasurer
|
Caligari is a showman at heart, as much as it can be said that he has a heart. Born in the Southern Icefield to an Ice Flight father and a Shadow Flight mother, it was quickly apparent that he took after the darker part of his heritage. From a young age he delighted in tricking other dragons out of their valuables, and eventually settled on hypnotism and sleight of hand as his preferred tricks of the trade. While this did not make him any friends, he never seemed to mind that other dragons despised him as a criminal and a charlatan. In fact, Caligari's ego seemed to thrive on the negative attention, seeing the hatred and anger of his peers as a sign of a job well done. He left home in his adolescence to find a place for himself in the Tangled Wood. That place turned out to be "in the middle of a mob of angry dragons demanding their money back." Eventually he made enough powerful enemies in his adopted home that he was forced to flee domains again, though he still maintains a strong sense of pride for his Shadow heritage. After further misadventures (mostly shrouded in mystery and lies), Caligari found his final refuge in the House of Echidna. Showing up at the House one day escorted by the quiet Dullahan, Caligari offered the House his services as treasurer for the estate. The results of handing over the House fortunes to Caligari proved almost instantly disastrous, in a series of events Caligari now tells as a "funny story" and Bram tells as "the greatest tragedy the concept of currency has ever known." However, despite losing his position as treasurer, Caligari shows no sign of leaving the House. He spends his days in town, performing feats of hypnotism for tourists and foolishly curious locals. While much of his act is clearly pure trickery, it has been speculated that Caligari has been slowly studying the eldritch secrets contained in the House library, gaining abilities no mere street performer could possess. It is certainly true that many local dragons have complained of waking up in strange places, missing valuables and unable to shake the memory of dark claws covering their eyes. Still others have woken up to grisly scenes and phantom memories even they are not willing to speak about. Caligari's personality is boisterous and flamboyant. Every word and gesture is theatre, a mask that never seems to slip into anything resembling the genuine. He laughs at his own jokes (and his own threats) and never misses a chance to brag about his exploits. The only time his vaudeville cheer slips is when someone brings up the rumors of his darker deeds. In those cases his demeanor becomes something no less practiced, but it is a mask designed to chill rather than delight. He will deny these rumors with his words, but his eyes will tell a different story. Those who try and press the subject tend to "disappear" before getting their answers. No one knows exactly what his relationship to the ominous spirit Dullahan is. While he frequently accompanies her on her travels, he seems ambivalent at best to the idea of friends or "loved ones." It's possible that she owes him a magically-binding debt, or that there is some kind of special price on his soul she is waiting to collect. Or maybe he just entertains her. Best not to question it.
