Biography
I'll be honest, this guy is on the chopping block for whenever I hit my goal number of dragons but then find I want another one. He's safe for now, and not just because he's a level 25. But for the record, Bochra is the Romulan fandragon of my dreams. He's also a Ridgeback. But probably just gray.

The edge of the water lapped at Ayel’s toes. Sadko watched, from a distance, in interest. He’d never known a Ridgeback to be so amenable to even touching water, much less contemplating a late-night swim. The Fae crept closer, his red banners and the end of his trident leaving trails in the wet sand. “Are you ready, then?” Ayel turned and that was when Sadko noticed. Though it looked like it did, the water didn’t quite reach Ayel’s feet. Even though they should have been close enough, the water rose up seemed to hit a wall just in front of his feet. It went around, reaching, but never quite touching, before falling back into the sea. Adjusting the sharp claws he wore on his feet, Ayel nodded. “Ready as ever.” “Should be quick.” Sadko scampered for the ocean, the saltwater coming up to his jaw in a moment before completely submerging him. His dormant gills came alive. He spun back to watch Ayel, walking into the water without so much as touching a drop of it. “What kind of Water dragon are you?” Sadko wondered with a good-natured grin. Ayel didn’t smile. “The kind that hates it.” It wasn’t a joke, or, at least, he didn’t act like it. Sadko couldn’t remember a time it seemed like Ayel enjoyed almost anything. He was quick to volunteer for undersea contacts, especially where Maren were involved, but Sadko didn’t know if that was enjoyment or acknowledgement of skills. “That’s a shame,” Sadko muttered. “To hate where you’re meant to be?” “If you believe in that kind of thing,” Ayel said. “Are you ready to hunt some squid or do you want to philosophize some more?” |

Most know Ridgebacks are professional diggers. Growing up in a clan beneath the floor of the Sea, Ayel ensured the underwater caverns had enough air for all to breathe. His Water eyes, used to the crushing abyss, let him see through the deep darkness as though it were light. Ayel’s clan had no pleasant relations with the neighboring Maren school. After months of siege, the dragons of Ayel’s clan scattered. Ayel found himself floating in the dark with his foreman and crew. Alone. Though the miners tried to exact revenge for their lost home and lives, the miners and diggers were defeated. Ayel holds deep resentment for Marens to this day, and wanders above his home Water. Alone. Not without some form of hope, Ayel’s skills kept him alive. He was still young, despite all he’d seen. The Maren schools taught him he could withstand any pressure, live on almost nothing. Even though he preferred fish for his meals, his desperately hungry belly taught him how to catch spiders, toads, and other subterranean meals. Ayel knew he was better below ground than he was above it, but meant that only in the best possible way. Terrible monsters rose from beneath the ground, and he found himself in the temporary employ of a band of monster hunters. Leveraging his knowledge and ability to work well with a team—as he’d always done with his mining and digging crew—he joined the Tempest Chase permanently. Even though some of the Chase are less thrilled with his poisonous Ashspine Widow, they can’t deny Ayel’s utility. Finally, Ayel got a chance to assist in a mission he’d been waiting for. Though his expertise lay in tracking and hunting underground creatures, his passion resided in destroying Maren. Though dragons like Sadko and Linwood tried to wean him from this mindset, he was immoveable. Whenever the chance to destroy a Maren school arises, Ayel is first in line. With his ironic command of Water magic, Ayel submerges himself in the sea without ever once touching a drop of water. Without a thought, Ayel has suffocated entire schools and buried them beneath the sands. |

Underwater volcanoes are common the closer one gets to Fire territory, so in the tradition of canaries testing the air quality of mine shafts, Ayel keeps an Ashspine Widow to warn him of deadly lava streams. Unlike female Ashspine Widows, males like Nero are rather docile, being almost half the size of their enormous mates. Even though Nero is a typical male Ashspine, he has become rather attached to Ayel and the other miners he works with. He takes any threats to their safety seriously, and will become vicious (though no more venomous than usual, fortunately) when he senses danger. |
