NEED TO TYPE THIS OUT

All the dragon breeds of Sornieth have their quirks, but some individuals are just a bit more different than others. Take the Tundras, for example. They’re widely known for their forgetfulness, and there are some Tundra dragons who forget just a bit more....

The parents of Offonail — “Off” for short — noticed this early on. “What are thoooose?” Off crooned, watching a swarm of insects whirl past. Her mother nuzzled her, explained that those were butterflies: “Say it with me, Off. But-ter-flies.

“Bah-fly!” she exclaimed, her blue eyes shining with glee. The rest of the clan laughed delightedly at her antics, and soon the whole thing was forgotten — until a few days later, when again she crooned, “What are thoooose?” as a swarm of butterflies whirled past....This time, her mother’s smile slipped just a bit. The rest of the clan crowded close, wondering what was wrong.

Lessons forgotten, words slipping away....Repetition became a cornerstone of Off’s life. Her parents, teachers, and relatives — all took the time to sit with her and go over things again and again. She needed to learn what food was safe to eat, which places to avoid, how to recognize her clanmates....The list went on and on.

But it helped that Off was curious and eager to learn. She was not stupid, not even simple-minded — far from it! Even as a child, she understood that her forgetfulness was not always a good thing. So she focused on her lessons with fiery zeal, trying various techniques and mnemonics to help her remember the world around her. Notes were a great help, but it took time to read and write them, and if they grew particularly long, sometimes she forgot what she was writing about or what she wanted to put down next. The method that worked best for her, she discovered, was picking up souvenirs.

They were exactly what they sounded like: objects that helped her remember experiences associated with them. After a trip to the seashore, she might return with a bag of pale shells — after a day at the fairgrounds, some stuffed toys — after a walk through the desert, some lightning-struck glass. She could look at them, get impressions of colors, scents, and sounds...and with patient thinking, those impressions would coalesce into a memory of an interesting day.

It was a helpful hobby, and her clan breathed a sigh of relief. Offonail could stay with them and they could continue teaching and protecting her. And perhaps that was the way it would’ve been, if only she hadn’t found the book....

She couldn’t remember where it’d come from, of course. Not that it mattered; what concerned the clan was what lay inside. The book contained stories of heroes, folktales and legends from Sornieth’s different regions. It was a scholarly tome, rather than one for entertainment, but Offonail, always interested in learning new words, read it very carefully indeed. From the dry analyses, she extracted tales of yore. And they ignited a fire inside her that would not be put out.

The scholars who’d written the book had been interested in the common elements of each story. They’d pointed out how the heroes were often ordinary dragons who left their clans in search of extraordinary destinies. “To the ancients, then, it seemed important that anyone, no matter how ‘ordinary’, could still have a great destiny. One only had to be brave enough to take the first steps in search of it...”

Destiny was such an exciting word! The heat of it filled Offonail’s heart and thundered through her blood. She looked at those words again and again, and even after she closed the book, they still danced before her mind’s eyes: Anyone, no matter how ‘ordinary’, could still have a great a destiny.

And she had to leave her clan in search of it.

This idea met resistance from Offonail’s family. They had grown protective of her, and now, even though she was already an adult, they were frightened of the thought of her wandering the world alone, forgetting the places she’d visited, the clan she’d left behind...forgetting how to recognize danger, who could be trusted and who could not. It was true that Off was also afraid of these — but then, hadn’t those heroes faced greater dangers and prevailed? Monsters, warlocks, assassins, and the Shade — surely her inconstant memory was a trifling threat next to those!

She did her best to convince the clan: “Something’s waiting for me out there, I just know it!” There were Guardians in her clan, and she gestured to them, saying, “It’s like Guardians and Charges. They leave their clan, no matter how weak or scared they might be, because they must find their Charge. They can’t help it — it’s their destiny!”

Was there Guardian blood within Offonail, some trick of atavism pushing her to find a Charge? The clan could not be sure. One thing was certain, though: Offonail was adamant about leaving the clan and looking for her destiny. There would be dangers along the way, but there would also be adventures. New experiences to have, new souvenirs to collect...

Offonail took a few souvenirs with her when she left her clan. Only the most crucial ones, to remind her of family and home. They had her name scratched onto them so that she would not forget it, and there were notes besides...

You are Offonail.

You are our baby. (Love, Mom and Dad)

We love you.

Come home when you can.

Perhaps she would do that....But not now. Not yet. Her destiny was out there, waiting to be found. She looked at her notes and added one more of her own:

Come home when you can. I have found my destiny - Off
