Where did it all start? When did it begin? What point in his life caused everything to stumble downwards and caused him such anguish? Perhaps it started when him and his perfect sister began to compete for the throne. Perhaps it was the first time she had beat him in a play fight. Maybe it started on the very day of his hatching. Axel couldn't tell. Ever since he could remember, he was hated by those who were supposed to be close to him. He was cast aside like scum by those who were meant to love him. The beloved and wonderful king and queen of their kingdom were rotten on the inside, throwing nothing but hate and anger towards their only son.

It was no secret that Zariel was the favorite. They way they beamed at her when she did anything good, praised her constantly, and showered her with gifts. It was as if she was some glorious goddess compared to Axel, while he was but trash found on the side of a road. He had trained harder than any other hatchling in the kingdom, waking before dawn and nearly passing out from exhaustion long past dusk. He helped wherever and whenever he thought he could, trying to be kind despite only ever experiencing hostility. He would try to impress his parents, he would try to do everything perfect like they seemed to want, but he always seemed to fall short. Being screamed at for the smallest of inconveniences became normal to him, but this caused the beginning of his uncontrollable rage and hate.

As they grew, the punishments thrown onto Axel became more harsh and much more frequent. If he were to say the wrong adjective in a sentence when speaking to the queen and king, he was thrown onto the ground for "speaking in a disrespectful manner". Meanwhile, Zariel would say something similar if not the same thing and be rewarded for it. Over the many moons of this happening, he became convinced that all of his family was against him, that Zariel was enjoying the fact that he was suffering. In reality, she had no clue what was happening to her beloved brother, and how their parents treated him. She had tried to keep a close and positive relationship between them, but he began pushing everyone away, being much more hostile and outright horrible to all that approached him.

The very moment he saw his parents begin to weaken, he knew Zariel was soon to take the throne. For the months following the transition of power, he developed his plan to strike back at those who he thought betrayed him from the moment he breathed his first breath. He was set on ruining his sister's reputation, wanting her to feel how he has for his entire life. Then, he would frame his parents for the crime he was to commit, ruining them as well and clearing his way to the throne where he thought he belonged.

Though when Axel was caught with the elixirs, his entire plan went downhill. Fighting his sister was a loosing battle, that he knew. What shocked him the most was the look in her eyes though, which was something he wished he could simply overlook. It was not one of pure hate or anger, it was not one of resentfulness, it was one of despair and disappointment. In the fleeting moment before she had knocked him unconscious, he had a brief thought that Zariel was actually innocent in all of this. Though when he felt her clawed hand slice down his face and the darkness consumed him, he has only wanted to finish what he started.
