______ Maybe they shouldn’t have named him “king”, or maybe someone with sense should have covered up his “royal” coloring closer to birth, because no one had bet on King Dice turning out quite the way that he did. And maybe that was the thing- that no one should ever bet on, against, or for King Dice, because he would always win, no matter the stakes, no matter the morals, no matter the rules. Yet dragons did, and they lost.
“His father was a mechanic!” his clanmates exclaimed, expecting the son of a tradesman to turn out hard-working and honorable. King didn’t see himself as letting his parents down, because truthfully, King was a tradesman. He traded in everything: money, magic, favors, souls, information. He was a dealmaker, and had no qualms about who he made them with, barring Imperials. A Pearlcatcher has the right to maintain a certain lifestyle without concern for the cost, especially if it spat in the faces of the Imperials who looked down on him.
Well, he thought that they looked down on him. And it was their loss, really (King Dice hated losing most of all), because King Dice was beloved by his clan. He had dozens of friends that admired his money, his lifestyle, his business, and his look.
That’s what he loved. That’s what they loved about him, even if those were the only things and they weren't really about him, so to speak.
Because everything was about King Dice.
