His mother had such clever hands. It was well past bedtime, but Alex stayed awake to watch her work, listening as she tried different voices, trying to find one that suited the puppet she was making. His mother was so good at mimicry....She applied it to her craft now. Paper and bamboo became wings, ready to soar. Glass buttons became brilliant eyes; paint was transformed into glittering scales adorning the dragon she’d coaxed, as if by magic, from formerly-featureless wood.

His mother attached the strings, and the puppet was complete: “Now he is ready to dance!” Alex laughed delightedly as his mother chased him, making the puppet growl and leap.

All things considered, it was one of his better memories. He still missed his mother and hoped she was well.

At times Alex woke up screaming in strange places, having sleepwalked away from his bed. Physicians clucked at this: “Night terrors...He’s an over-imaginative child. He’ll outgrow them. Put him to work; let him tire himself out.”

And so his mother taught him how to craft puppets, to wield his tools confidently, just as she did. She beamed with pride. In time, Alex would become a master craftsdrake just like her....

A nightmare took him away. One night, Alex sleepwalked out of the lair. It was some time before he felt the cold, and he awoke in the middle of a raging blizzard.

He wailed in fear as he realized this, turning around in the snow. Try though he might, he couldn’t find it — his lair was gone. Huge drifts threatened to bury him and all too soon, his limbs became numb, unresponsive. He whimpered in fear, knowing that if nothing changed soon, he would die.

“Someone’s coming.” He felt them before he heard them, footsteps shaking the ground. Hope and terror churned within him as he turned to see who it was.

A Guardian, huge and old, her scales faded with age. And so dark...She looked like a silhouette sliced into the snow. “You should not be here.” — her voice rumbled, low and strong. Alex struggled to see her eyes; they seemed to be...covered? Was she wearing a hood?

“I’m lost. Please...help me...”

“A lair awaits you.” It was nearly a sigh. “Stay close, child. I shall take you there.”

She extended a wing downward to shield him, and Alex sighed in relief. It seemed the underside of the Guardian’s wing was twinkling, but when he turned to look, the impression vanished. He stayed close to her feet instead, fluttering when he grew warm enough to move.

After some minutes of walking, the Guardian lifted her wing. Alex looked up at the double doors that loomed above him, set in a vast construct of stone.

“The Cathedral of Eyes. Fear not, child, for this is your home now — I decree it to be so,” the Guardian intoned. The blizzard still swirled beyond her, but it was strangely dim....The Guardian was, too. Her outline blurred like watercolors.

“This isn’t...my home — Wait!” Alex gasped as the Guardian loped back into the snow. He tried to follow her, protesting that he needed to go back to his family — and the blizzard erupted again. It smashed him like a hammer, and he screamed as it flung him against the door. There he lay, unmoving, as the snow receded at last.

Minutes later, the doors creaked open.

That was how Alex came to the Cathedral of Eyes. He was stunned to learn his whereabouts — he was in the Sunbeam Ruins, half a world away. He had walked for minutes...in the company of a strange Guardian....How had he gotten here?

The Cathedral-dwellers had their suspicions. Alex heard whispers of an ancient Guardian, a celestial beast with many glittering eyes....He did want to know who she was and why she had brought him here. But whenever he considered it, something seemed to tell him, “Not yet, not yet...”

In time, his curiosity faded. He became apprenticed to one of the Cathedral’s own craftsdrakes; he also remembered his mother’s lessons well, and in time he was creating marionettes for the clan.

He was happy there. But the nightmares didn’t stop. Sometimes he found himself walking in his sleep, as if something were calling him...not onto the tundra, but deeper into the Cathedral, into the darkness of winding corridors and echoing, empty ballrooms....

What was down there? When he woke up, it was always a relief, but only for a split-second. He had encountered the helpful Guardian long ago, but he didn’t doubt that what awaited him down here was very different indeed, something that, waking or dreaming, he would never wish to see.
