The Smallest Beginnings

The Brood-Mother was eagerly waiting at the entrance to the lair, nostrils flaring as the Fae caught the unfamiliar scent of the tiny burden wrapped in scant swadling and cradled in Sylphire’s gentle hand. In the other arm, she held a large white and scarlet plant, flowering proudly with an intoxicating scent that lingered sweetly on the tongue and bore strange, emboldened leaves hanging heavily from the stalk.
Sylestia danced around Sylphire as she placed the plant upon a makeshift shelf that had been organically grown from the relentless twisting vines that enshrouded the arbour of trees that formed their abode. The splash of white and scarlet was an oasis of riotous colour against the verdant greens and browns and it struck upon her that perhaps she could somehow graft these flowers into the lair itself.
It was now clear the little dragon was eager to see what she had acquired on her travels. Sylestia tugged gently on the Clan-Maiden’s arm and without further delay Sylphire pulled away the swadling from the tiny creature in her charge. The Fae let out a startled gasp of wonder and surprise as she pulled Sylphire’s hand down to her eye level for a better look.
“Is this… is this a Hummingbee?”
Sylphire smiled and nodded in response as the hatchling dragon began to stir. Paperweight wings of painted crimson and white unfurled from around a murky body as a miniscule mouth gaped in a yawn followed by a hiccup and the opening of two emerald set eyes.
“Goodness!,” exclaimed Sylestia, “I have heard of these dragons but I had never thought I’d see one. It’s no bigger than a small butterfly. Wherever did you find it?”
Sylphire scratched her head and watched as the hatchling mewled and crawled upright on her hand to better take in its surroundings.
“Well..,” she began, “I decided to introduce myself at a local meet and greet and happened to bump into a fellow Fae enthusiast by the name of Gormanghaste. They very kindly offered me one of their brood to help get myself established and… well, I fell for this little boy. Talk about serendipity.”
Sylestia nodded and cooed at the Hummingbee, her crest quivering in nuanced ways that only a Fae could understand as she stroked between his ears.
