Biography
Derecho the Shade Researcher read like your life depends on it Theme: Journey to Skyhold |

━━ story ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Derecho didn’t worry. Not usually. Her half-sister, Cyclone, was only out on a hunt. Never mind her obsession with the Shade usually took her to unnecessary dark corners of Sornieth and monsters she had no business fighting herself. She’d always made it back alive before, and this time was no different. Cyclone stepped into her tent, her rainbow’s worth of armor decorating her sleek black body. Before Derecho could welcome her home, Cyclone spoke. “I found something weird.” Derecho looked up in interest. “Weird? Like ‘the Shade’ weird?” Without looking down, Derecho reached for her own tome of scribbled notes. They were still so far away from knowing anything, never mind tracking or fighting it. Cyclone tilted her head slightly, and Derecho was struck by her resemblance to their mother. “I don’t think so.” “Well, if anyone would know,” Derecho sighed, closing her book in defeat, “you would. What was it, then?” “It was like it, though,” Cyclone said hastily. “But not quite it. It was dark like a shadow, swirling like water, cold like ice, and… well, it had the shape of a dragon but it wasn’t. And I could swear it was here, but somewhere else.” Derecho narrowed one eye on Cyclone. “Now you just sound crazy.” “It was there.” Cyclone shrugged, apparently unruffled by the proclamation. She might have already settled on the label herself. “And I think it was one of us.” “You said it wasn’t a dragon?” “No. A Shade hunter.” |

━━ history ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
|
Derecho comes from a family with a history of hunting only the most dangerous creatures Sornieth has on offer. As one of the founders of the Tempest Chase, her mother, Lightning, did nothing but encourage Derecho’s interest in what was considered insanely dangerous by most other dragons. Though there’s no evidence to support her feeling, Derecho has always blamed this constant pursuit of danger as the reason Lightning and her once-lover, Fayne, are no longer together. It is from Fayne that Derecho gets her sense of intense loyalty, her feathered wings and fantail, and utter lack of humor. She sometimes annoys her brother, Stratus, and half-sister, Cyclone, with her rarely-smiling persona, but Derecho doesn’t care much. She has work to do. As a small Skydancer, Derecho was always interested in the magic seeping through cracks in the world because she was not always a Skydancer. Her father’s clan and the magic surrounding it turn all dragons that stay there for too long into Skydancers, and Derecho and her brother were no exception. She was too young to ever have a Charge, too young to ever remember what it was like to have a scaled body instead of a feathered one. All the same, this interest━and, indeed, fear━led Derecho down dark paths that even Lightning couldn’t condone. There was stronger magic in the universe than that which changed her shape, and Derecho believes with all her being that it must be understood and fought at all costs. When Derecho isn’t studying the Shade, the dark monster of her nightmares, she learns best how to fight it. Despite her being a Wind dragon, Derecho has taken it upon herself to learn all the magic there is, and she’s already proven she can do almost anything she puts her mind to. She’s nothing if not stubborn, much like her parents. Like the other more academic dragons of the Tempest Chase, Derecho finds her Wind wanderlust quota securely filled by the constant up-and-moving lifestyle the Chase provides. She prefers to explore the darkest secrets others dare not touch. All of Sornieth could depend on it. |
━━ familiar ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Though Derecho’s research library on the Shade is nothing to boast about, it’s the largest repository of knowledge the Chase has besides Birch’s familiar research. Unfortunately, some items are the doing of Derecho’s scroll stealer, Must. Derecho befriended the spirit on accident in a library in Shadow territory when she “borrowed” a book entitled Shade and Shadow: An Unlikely Coincidence. Must isn’t as discerning on book topics, stealing more questionable romance novels than anything else. Must seems to enjoy it when Derecho reads anything aloud, even when bought one of those romance novels. |
━━ clan ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
While their interests are very much the same (hunting the Shade) their approaches differ greatly. Cyclone, Derecho’s half-sister, prefers to go out looking for the stuff and the creatures it corrupts. Derecho prefers to watch from a distance, documenting and theorizing. Neither have any disdain for the other, but rather appreciate that the other is willing and happy to do the necessary half of the battle that the other dislikes. They spend their off-hours pitching outlandish theories on the Shade for the fun of it, or spending time flying with their brother. Little in the world is more precious than family. |
Whatever her name is - a Shade hunter (with her brother, I presume) that can cross some kind of dimensional plane that the Shade sees… or something like that. Like, the Shade exists in Sornieth and it’s universe, but it can only see what is in this other dimension. And Whatever her name is can actually go there. (Yes, I’ve seriously got two pairs of siblings hunting the Shade. It’s clearly a family business.) |
Even though they hunt entirely different things, both Aroer and Derecho feel the weight of all Sornieth on their shoulders. While Aroer is filled with a sort-of self-loathing as an Emperor and Imperial hunter, Derecho is plagued by the constant fear that if she doesn’t solve the problem of the Shade then no one will. Though they both trust the gods will do what they have to in order to save the world when the time is right, they don’t necessarily trust the gods to save them. It’s a lonely existence that no one seems to know except for them. |
━━ trivia ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
» Derecho shares her surname with her brother, Stratus Crowwing, for their father’s clan’s name. » » Derecho spends most of her time (when the Chase isn’t on the move) in her tent studying. Nevertheless, she greatly enjoys flying and getting the lay of the land. If she were not a researcher, she thinks she might have liked to be a mapmaker. |
aesthetic: Derecho’s tent is decorated with tomes wrapped in dark leather, shady artifacts, and other items of questionable origin. |
likes: nice handwriting, studying, flying, seeing grand vistas dislikes: the Shade, lack of knowledge, lack of time, long-distance flying _________________________________________________________ |
