Marcus
You'll never get anything in life if you don't go out and chase it, I always say!
Marcus is one of the clan's hunters, along with his mate Anika. Between the two of them, they make sure that the clan is always kept well fed. Marcus prefers to use speed and agility when he hunts, chasing down prey swiftly and outmaneuvering them whether on the ground or in the air. Anika prefers to hunt by baited ambushes, nets and snares, things that allow her to lie in wait patiently. Although their two preferences are very different, they each suit their individual personalities, with Anika being patient and observant, and Marcus being energetic and impulsive. However, they've also learned to hunt in each other's styles so as to better work together, and they combine the two when need be. Marcus is happy to chase prey into Anika's ambush, or learn to set a snare for something too fast even for him. Anika also helps direct him as to the best location and prey for that day, to avoid any overhunting. He appreciates the thought she puts into these things, since he can sometimes get caught up in the thrill of the chase.
Marcus had always loved running and chasing things. Even as a young hatchling, he would always want to keep playing tag long after his siblings were tired. He would chase leaves on the wind, and pounce on his parent's tails, wrestling with them fiercely until they were “defeated.” He had boundless energy, and loved the feel of the wind in his face and the ground racing past underneath him. His love of roaming, common to wind dragons, was especially strong, and his parents often had to keep a close eye on him, since he would wander farther than any of his siblings. It was to no one's surprise when he grew up and decided he wanted to leave the clan, to wander and explore wherever his feet and wings could take him.
Marcus enjoyed wandering across the Windswept Plateau, visiting new clans and seeing new things, but in time he began to miss having a place to settle. Much as he enjoyed wandering, he realized he had taken the comfortable familiarity of his old home for granted. It was in a somewhat thoughtful mood that he stumbled upon a young hatchling, standing by the edge of a pond and pawing at the water. Marcus couldn't see any adults around, and placid as the water was, he worried about the danger if she fell in, so he hurried over to ask her if she was lost. He quickly learned that she had just left “for a minute” to come catch a snack because she was hungry. Marcus, having a better idea of how long she'd been gone and how worried her clan might be from his own childhood habit of wandering off for just a minute, offered to catch her something if she would come with him back to her clan afterward. He quickly caught a small fish, just the right size for a hatchling's meal, and began to follow her tracks back the way she'd come.
He quickly ran into a frantic guardian, Bell, who was very happy to see the hatchling, for whom he'd been searching for some time. After introductions were made, and the wary guardian reassured that Marcus hadn't made off with her in the first place, he asked curiously how Marcus had found his way to the lair so quickly. Marcus explained that he was a hunter, and he had followed her trail back. Bell was very impressed, and asked if he might like to think about joining the clan, which had dragons who could hunt but no dedicated hunters just yet. It was exactly what Marcus had been hoping to find, and it felt like perhaps the Windsinger had sent him a sign that this was the clan for him. He happily agreed, and set himself to the task of hunting and keeping them well fed.
The clan wasn't small when he joined, and it promised to keep growing, making hunting for them all a full time job. Marcus offered to train some of the others, but while he could teach them to track and pounce, he couldn't give them the speed and maneuverability that made him so effective at it. Everyone there had their own job, and couldn't devote much time to helping him hunt. He knew he had an important job and threw his all into it, but he was beginning to feel a little run down. Then, as if by fate, he met Anika, a coatl who had been wandering and seeking a clan much as he had. After getting into an impromptu fish catching contest with her, he realized how much fun he'd had. He took the opportunity to invite her back to the lair, promising that the clan's cooks would make them a feast with their combined efforts. Over dinner, he made sure to mention that the clan could use another hunter, and praise her skills. He was delighted when she decided to join the clan and do just that.
Working with Anika was an education, since her methods were very different from his. She wasn't as fast or agile as he was, but she was methodical and well-read, and she knew many varieties of traps, nets, and snares she'd found in old books. She showed him how to set bait out in an area for a few days, to lure more prey there than he might have chanced across, and how to chase prey to her as she lay in ambush, so the both of them could strike before the herd scattered. Learning from her, and flying alongside her on the hunt, he realized that his respect for a fellow hunter had grown into affection for his reliable hunting partner, and then something much more. He wasn't sure what to do about it. He had always been the type to chase and pounce, but he had no idea how to pursue Anika or capture her heart.
Finally, out of desperation, he decided that he had to impress her. He spent a whole day hunting down the largest stag with the most magnificently branching rack of antlers he could find, and returned triumphantly to lay it at her feet. She accepted it with a soft laugh and kissed his nose, telling him “You didn't have to do that. Didn't you know I liked you already?” It turned out that while he had been chasing her heart, she had been quietly stalking after his as well. He was overjoyed, and the two have been together ever since.
The two of them have only grown closer as both mates and hunting partners, and they still engage in impromptu competitions from time to time. Both of them know how important their job is to the clan's well-being, and splitting the work between them means that neither gets run down or burnt out by it. Marcus and Anika, with Bell's permission, sometimes take the hatchlings out on little hunting trips of their own, teaching them how to track, stalk, and pounce. Anika teaches the patient ones how to stay quiet and observe, while Marcus takes the energetic ones running to see what they can stir up and chase. He is more than quick enough to keep up with even the most unruly and wandersome group of hatchlings, even when they include his own quick-footed offspring.
Well come on, what are you waiting for?
