NEED TO TYPE THIS OUT

All the dragon breeds of Sornieth have their quirks, but some individuals are just a bit more different than others. In some clans, these differences are celebrated. In others, not so much....

Gimoedi’s ancestors were Wildclaws from the Viridian Labyrinth. In their deity’s name, they crossed the ocean to the Sunbeam Ruins, where Gimoedi was born. Despite his sunshine-golden eyes, he was a true Wildclaw, and his family was determined to make him into a fighter like themselves.

The clan leaders wanted Gimoedi to learn about other Flights so that they might be more easily dominated, but Gim was uninterested in that. He was fascinated by how different other dragons were — not just the other Flights and breeds but the individuals, dragons who had dreams and hopes beyond what their own clans wanted for them. Gim found admired these dragons — and he wished he could be like them, too.

His clan would not hear of it. They had been sent here as examples of the Gladekeeper’s might, and for a dragon to eschew that and strike out on their own...It was unthinkable! The elders frowned as they studied Gimoedi. He had grown into a fine warrior, but he was a bit too soft for their liking. They had weeded out unsuitable clanmates before and could do so again....But for now, Gimoedi remained useful to them.

The clan soon moved to the Shifting Expanse. In this desert, the winds were harsh, and when the sun hid, it was because there were storms brewing, lightning threatening to skewer unwary travelers.

Unwary travelers, in this volatile desert? Indeed — the clan met one of them on a humid afternoon. A Tundra carrying bags and pouches, all of them bulging with knickknacks. Gimoedi and his clanmates eyed them curiously. Was this dragon a peddler?

Not at all — she was a traveler, making her way by scavenging and gathering. Gim was surprised by this. He’d been taught that a clan was necessary if one was to survive, but apparently this young Tundra was doing fine on her own.

The clan grudgingly agreed to let her stay overnight. Gimoedi, wondering how she’d managed to survive in the desert, found an excuse to sit next to her and interview her. She introduced herself as “Off” and started laying out her knickknacks, telling the stories and lessons associated with each one. Gim already knew that each dragon had their own story — now it awed him to realize that even objects might have tales and meanings behind them.

The elders observed this interaction disapprovingly. The next day, when they expelled Offonail from the clan, they weren’t surprised when Gimoedi tried to intercede for her, asking if she could travel with them. It would be safer for her, and she was native to the Expanse; perhaps she could guide them—

His insubordination was the excuse they’d been waiting for, and they used it to exile him. Gimoedi could only stand in stunned silence as the clan left them behind. When the other dragons were distant dots on the horizon, realization dawned on him. It was terrifying at first, having no one to give him orders or tell him what to do...and then the terror changed to exhilaration as he looked at his new companion. After years spent chained to a path that hadn’t agreed with him, he’d been cut loose. He was free from his old destiny — and ready to discover a new one.

Gim had to admit that his fireside chat with Offonail had inspired him. He felt he owed her something in return, so he decided to travel with her, help keep her out of danger. It was difficult at first: Off sometimes forgot hazards and landmarks, and it was up to him to remind her.

Her family had already written some notes for her, so first, he studied those. Then he started writing some of his own. In doing so, he got to know Offonail’s moods and preferences. He laughed at her antics and found himself wanting to write more than just warnings. He looked at the latest addition — “You cannot talk to elk no matter how hard you try” — and knew that, in the future, she would ask him to explain the story behind that. And he did — over and over again. The nice thing about it was that he didn’t mind at all. Not once, not even a tiny bit.

Inevitably, he ran out of paper. Offonail suggested that they write on their clothes since those were always around. After struggling to write right side up on his vest, Gimoedi gave up. His wings drooped despondently...and they gave him an idea.

Over the next few days, notes began appearing on Gimoedi’s wings. He wrote the things Offonail needed to know. Not all of them were about food or avoiding danger. Some of them were about exciting times they’d had together, things to lift her spirits and keep her going on her journey.

He wrote the words “I love you” one day. Next morning, when Off woke up, she looked at him curiously, trying to ascertain who he was. She had bad memory days sometimes; he’d learned not to take it too hard. She squinted at the words on his wings and then gasped when she saw those three little words. Shyness flooded her features, then relief, and finally recognition.

Soon she was her old self again, excited to continue searching for her destiny. She looked at her souvenirs, using them to recall the places she’d visited, the experiences she’d had. Gimoedi, watched her relive her past, was deeply, truly at peace. He didn’t begrudge her her destiny, whatever it might be, and was glad to help her search for it. His place in the world, as he’d decided long ago, was right here, at her side.
