Betu knew the warmer winds always preceded a rapid thaw. However, she refused to tell this to her most recent clutch, and as the three slowly made their way across a frozen lake, the brittle ice crumbled from their weight.

The hatchlings weren't as quick as their mother, and as Betu took flight to avoid the cold water, they, and their pearls, quickly disappeared beneath the surface.

It wasn't the cold that shocked the air from Ziora's lungs so much as the sudden plunge. Breathless and submerged, it took her a moment to come back from the surprise, and another to begin flailing about in her first clumsy attempts to swim back up. It didn't take her long to discover that her wings made for excellent paddles in the water, but she couldn't seem to drag herself to the surface...until she dropped her pearl. It wasn't a conscious decision. It wasn't even a moment she'd later be able to clearly recall. As soon as she dropped the deadweight - far too much for her little hatchling body to haul along - she began to make progress. The pearl's shape dwindled beneath her to settle somewhere in the lakebed's murk.

She managed to get her muzzle out of the water for a few frantic gasps. Her claws found a piece of ice big enough to help keep afloat, and for a moment, it seemed like her unexpected trial was over. Ziora yapped out her mother's name, fully expecting her to reach out and help pluck her out from the water, and she kicked hard to try and get on top of the small floe and out of the water, the air feeling much icier now for the dip.

Broken ice and wet paws, however, do not make for good purchase. The ice flipped. She hit the water. And again, she was left holding her breath. This time, her more streamlined impact put her further below, and as she spread her wings to begin to climb anew, a weak current caught them instead.

She was dragged along for a distance, thrashing her way upwards as best she could, but by the time she made it up, she was greeted with the solid underside of the ice. There was only so much her cold-sluggish limbs could do. As she scratched uselessly for the light she could dimly make out above her, she could hear the muffled life around her more distinctly. There was life below her. Plants disrupted by the passing of creatures, bubbles thrown upward by the displacement of the mud, the far chinking of the broken ice; somewhere, she could hear a dull thumping in the surface world.

The filtered light above her grew shadowed.

With a mighty impact, the ice above her shattered, and her world went white.

Ziora woke up in a stranger's bag. Not that she initially knew this, of course; in the groggy first moments of her reawakening, she was only aware that she was curled up and buried in something soft, away from the biting wind. The cold of the water was gone, replaced with something much more agreeable, if not quite warm. It might as well have been her old nest.

It took her several minutes to wake enough to question her surroundings. With a little bit of wriggling - she was tangled more than she'd anticipated in whatever musty-smelling material was in here - she managed to poke her snout out into the sharp night air. A little more kick, and she had her head out from what she then realized was a satchel's flap.

An unfamiliar dragon, bigger than she'd ever seen, lay curled around the still-glowing embers of a dying campfire, the bag in which she sat strapped firmly to their side. Their paws and mane still showed signs of frozen water crusted into them, and the steadiness of their breath seemed to mean they were sleeping. Ziora's eyes followed the striping of their hide up to their massive head. Sure enough, closed eyes. She squirmed ferociously at the gap she'd made until, with a blunt poff, she fell to the snow below. After a quick shake, she trotted up to the dragon's face.

Despite the fact that the dragon's closed eye was probably bigger than her own whole head, she didn't feel particularly afraid. It was obvious enough that the vast creature had helped her. But...what about her brother? Her mother? She could vaguely account for the latter having flown off to avoid the water, but after the ice splintered, she had completely lost track of her clutchmate.

She was old enough to worry, but not enough to grasp the idea of death. All there was to do was sit and try to work it out. So she simply stayed there, head hung and huddled against the chill, until she reached a conclusion; her clutchmate had been fished out by their mother, or he was lost. If he had been rescued, the only reason she had not been was because their mother couldn't reach her. Neither scenario would help her find them again, but it would at least provide enough of an answer for her muddled mind to settle. And in the meantime?

There was nothing else for it. She was small and this stranger had rescued her where her mother could not.

She pads back over to the bag she'd crawled out from, the energy gone from her step, and hauls herself clumsily back into its folds. She could be okay with this. This could be okay.
