My little wildfire, her mother used to call her when she was small and clumsy and barreling full speed into every passing feeling, every fancy that splashed from the corners of her mind like dewdrops falling as she trampled by. Little wildfire , even as she grew into the slow grace and deep-rooted calm that her mother and her mother’s mother were loved for, settled the legacy of wise rule stretching as far back as the history of their clan upon her broadening shoulders. Maybe her mother had known, somehow, how tenuous her grasp was on this second nature; maybe she had seen the sparks in the forests of her eyes, had seen how close she was to conflagration.

Maybe that’s why, that day she left the clan behind for the last time, there’d been no talk of duty, of history, none of the words that might’ve convinced her to stay; only her mother’s eyes gentle and solemn as they branded her heart, only be safe, little wildfire. Maybe it was those words or that absence that pulled on her leaden stomach like magnetite, drove her into crashing waves with only a gill-charm around her neck and a vague fearful hope that here she might be quenched—

(What she found is better, she tells herself, is home, and so she stays through battle and death, through hunger and sorrow, and she takes up again the place she was bred for, tells herself she can’t feel the water turn to steam as she swims by.)
