"I never asked for this-- I never wanted any of this. Why do you all avoid me like the plague?

What did I do to deserve this fate?"

Please save me from this nightmare I've become
[20/04/XX] - Edge of the Wandering Contagion - Day ?

Slime slid from the shells as the restless hatchlings within battled against their captors. As the plagued eggs wriggled relentlessly, toxic sludge swelled and shifted out of the abandoned nest they'd called home. Disgruntled at their comfortable beds which had wriggled to life, the slargs hissed their displeasure to one another as they retreated to another ditch a meter or so away.

With a gush of fluid, the hatchlings finally broke free of their thick husk cages. The liquid cushion was drenched over the dragons like a wet blanket, but only the skydancer hatchling seemed perturbed by the oil sliding between his feathers. The four pearlcatcher hatchings immediately began to gnaw away at their discarded eggshells, instead.

Arae watched as the skydancer began the children's futile pleads for their parents. As each pearlcatcher finished consuming their old home, they joined their brother in his crying.

The nest had been abandoned since the day of it's creation.

Arae had seen the madness in their mother's eyes-- the preparation of the nest was a front at best. An certainty of preservation to force the children to fight their own battle with survival. Arae and her friends were often shifted around by those taken by the plague-- slargs were an extra cushioning layer for abandoned nests, after all.

[27/04/XX] - The Abiding Boneyard - Day 2

Rumour of the famous Necromancers, esteemed servers of Mother of the Rot, reached even the abandoned nests of the Wandering Contagion. After all, these prestigious servants of the Wasteland were the pinnacle of survivors-- living ideals of all the Plague stood for.

It was only natural that those left to starve knew all that they could never be.

She could be that.

A snarl rumbled out of the young pearlcatcher's teeth, low and threatening, as a daring bonepicker edged closer to her precious pearl. A side-eyed glare was returned with a sarcastic roll, but Arae followed through with the unspoken order request. Quietly, the slarg wrapped its toxic form over the shimmering orb.

If the bonepicker could wrinkle his beak, he certainly would. As it was, the bird huffed before turning his nose away from the black goo.

"We're nearly there, Arae."

"We're not even halfway there." The slarg huffed in frustration. "Why do you even keep this thing around, anyway."

"It's..." the young Pearlcatcher seemed confused by it herself. Gnawing away at the carcass, the dragon prodded the slarg-surrounded pearl. "... it's special to me. I don't know. Instinct or some rot..."

"A whole lotta rot, it sounds like."

[03/05/XX] - Halfway up the Rotrock Rim - Day 8

Low, keening sounds seemed to seep through the pestilent planet. Whimpers and whines whipped through the world, washing away any noises challenging their dominance. Arae had long since covered her ears, clogging the membranes with however much excrete it took to erase her ward's warbling.

"It's gone, it's gone, why did it-- what made it go? Why did She take it from meeeeee??" The incessant pleads seemed seamless, and neither night or day had yet to bring an end to the despair. "Why did She take my pearl from me?!"

However much rot the dragon's pearl had been before, it couldn't be close to how rotten the gem now is. Watching a travelling clan reach the edge of the pearlcatcher's voice range, and then turn around to avoid the slowly degrading corpse, Arae wish she'd had more experience with pearlcatchers before this clutch hatched.

Maybe she'd have offered to take the pearl before the dying dragon swam in the rivers from the Wyrmwound.

But maybe She would have taken it from them another way.

"Please, please, please,please--"

The Wastelands didn't answer.

** [10/05/XX] - The Abiding Boneyard - Day 12

Arae clung to her ward's horn, keeping the protrusion clasped tightly to the centre of her mass as the writhing vegetable slowly razed her incomprehensible path through the Wastelands. The words had finished degrading days ago, and now verbal communication was impossible. If it weren't for the fact that the teenaged dragon was still alive and cognoscente, Arae would have left long ago.

At least, that was the excuse she told herself.

In reality, the slarg had abandoned nests for less, let along dragons. It didn't make sense, for her to stick around when She had decided their death preemptively. These lands were one of survival, and Arae had no qualms in ditching the largest predators who were unfit for life; they had enough going in their favour that they could deal with it.

This corpse, however, had remained animated the entire time. Verbal or otherwise, this hatchling had a fighting spirit that refused to die, even in death.

Arae had heard and shared the rumours of Necromancers. She'd heard the tales of those who died in the trials, and those who could returned unable to heal what they destroyed.

The tales of the living dead, however, were little more than a whisper. She'd said so aloud many times before, and she'd say it again.

"Your enemy whispers
So you have to scream
I know about whispers
I see how you look at my sisters.
"

The dragon had been long gone, and the works crackled with the infection plaguing her throat. Arae bitterly commented that maybe the pearlcatcher should have been a fae-- then her voice wouldn't be so abrasive now.

'Maybe you wouldn't have lost your soul like that.' Arae couldn't bring herself to say that aloud. There was a reason she'd helped the dragon pick out a bloodstone replacement.

"This was my home
All this pain and devastation
How it tortures me inside.
"

"Whatever you said, kid." Arae agreed, ignoring the tears dripping down the dragon's cheek. It tickled and mixed with her sludge, but she'd agree with anything at this point if it would make her ward happy. "Whatever you said."
