  Her gift is great at first: she reads the future as clearly as her pink-eyed brethren do the stars, each glittering constellation bright and clear, woven neatly into the threads of the future. Each time she experiments, she probes deeper into the thinly woven veil, careful not the touch that which is forbidden. Yet still there are too many possibilities to account for, too many futures to safeguard.

She must account for them all, you understand.

In the beginning, her gift is lauded and praised; her reputation spreads in Sorineth, but in this world of magic and mysticism, she is not the only one with abilities.

Not once does the attention become overwhelming. Not once does she allow herself to be flattered by the praise and adoration others heap upon her.

But a gift like this comes at a cost. She has been lucky to avoid such consequences so far, but the world works in ways even a prophet as far-sighted as her cannot predict.

She is, however, sure of one thing and one thing only: there will come a time when she’ll turn her eyes to the vast reaches of outer space, and the only thing that greets her is blinding darkness, deafening solitude, and damning condemnation.

She doesn’t know when. She doesn’t know why.

All she understands that it will happen. And when it does, when the executioner’s blade falls, when the Arcanist himself turns his endlessly fascinated attention upon her, she will not be prepared.

She has seen empires burn and cities crumble. Up to this moment, she has never felt true fear.
