PERSONAL FILE:

Khan had been alone since an early age. She never knew her parents, though those around her did. They left her alone and they never returned, and Khan had to fend for herself. And, fend for herself she did. Khan learned how to survive, and she was good at it.

It took years, but Khan had carved a living from the unforgiving wastes. She had what she needed most of the time. She could scavenge battlefields and rotting carcasses half buried. Steel and iron and bone and leather provided for her when few others would. But, Khan was no longer alone as she had been. She had a family of those similarly forgotten or just those that know no other way to live. Khan and her family of scrappers all vied to be seen by others, to find a way up from the mud. Khan lived on the fringes of the Legion's clans, never managing to make a life in any of them. She had no name and no home, until she did.

There was a day, a blest day, that Khan caught the eye of another. A border skirmish, a friendly bloodletting between rivaling clans, and the young, nameless whelp was dragged right into the middle of it. The Great Khan himself had been there, and he watched Khan rise from the detritus and the decay of the field. Battered and bloodied, but alive. She had survived, but jubilant in the bloody mess Khan was not.

She was perfect.

Khan was seen. A face in the waste noticed and taken in. Few get that opportunity, and Khan was the only one of her varied family to be carried away from the frontier. The rest were left behind, but she had a chance to carry on, to survive a little bit longer. She promised that she would return one day, but only to herself. Khan was grateful, of course, but afraid of what it all meant.

Khan took to the training, and the food, very well. The regimen was grueling, but it was nothing Khan had not felt every day for her entire life. The sores, and knotted muscles, and the broken bones were not new to her. She jumped into it all with ambition. It was every scrapper's dream to be out there, fighting and proving themselves. But, to be the prodige of the Khan themselves? That was momentous for Khan. She had barely believed her mentor when he offered to train her. She thought he was joking, or maybe even mad, but he was sane and willing. So, Khan was brought to the center of the Legion, karakorum, aside the Wyrmwound itself. Khan had never seen so many dragons in one place outside of a war zone, and it was wondrous.

And so the years went on. Khan trained and she lived. She saw many faces, and met many people. She got to sit through the politics of the realms, and she got to wander the lands as much as she wanted. She was The Great Khan's only pupil, and she wondered what she was for. What sort of plan did The Great Khan have? Perhaps he just wanted to teach, or maybe he wanted a child to raise, or maybe something else entirely. Khan learned about the other masses too, and how they work, but Khan didn't much like that as much as learning about plants or swinging sharp objects.

One day, as Khan trained, a young imperial slowly approached her, a bowl of water in his possession. Gilded with silver and faint blue gemstones, the imperial was a servant no doubt he was no older than Khan herself, but he was far larger already. Khan had never seen an imperial before, and he was beautiful. August, as the servant was named, had been sent to serve the young Khan. And serve he did. Every day, he would bring her water and food after her morning training, and the two would talk. The would chat about training or about the weather or about the filigree that decorated August's body. Anything. And they became close. Too close, some would say.

Khan and August were not very subtle, however.

During a summit between the various masses and their Khans, Khan and August had snuck away to get a little privacy, so to speak. Cadmus, a young heir to a magister position from the Core, caught wind of the happenings and followed the two. Cadmus found the two tangled a little more tightly than expected, and Cadmus was in a petty mood that day.

Needless to say, after managing to escape the clutches of the two dragons, Cadmus was smug enough to inform his superiors, who, through a chain of contact, eventually got word to August's master who was ever so slightly mortified by the embarrassment. August's master showed his displeasure by blinding one of Khan's eyes when she came to defend August, but whatever happened to August when he was out of sight could very well have been worse. Khan herself was furious, and hurt, and terrified of what was going to happen next. The Great Khan did nothing to punish or even console her, and, indeed, did not mention it at all. So, Khan hatched her own vengeance.

Sneaking from her quarters every night, she would meet with August in the training yard after he was sent to sleep by his master. He gave up hours of sleep every night to be with Khan, and Khan was doing the same to train August herself. Whatever she learned while light, she mirrored back to August at night. There was a new servant to tend to Khan during the day, but she kept an emotional distance, as if Khan were going to seduce her too somehow. That was the rumor for a while, at least.

And so it was that Khan and August worked hard to bring their plan to fruition. It would take another few years, however.

Another summit came. The listener of the Brotherhood, the monarch of the Vanguard, Cadmus the archmagister of the Core, the three consuls of the Enclave and The Great Khan of the Legion all came together in the city of karakorum to discuss anything and everything considered pressing. And, Khan had to sit there, behind her mentor, as he tried to keep the negotiations on track.

Right in the middle of a debate, The Great Khan stands and calls for attention. The other Khans turn their attention the The Great Khan, and he quits right then and there. He just quits, and then walks away. There was a stunned silence for a few moments, and then an uproar. The Khans were incredulous, and Khan was just as flabbergasted. What was happening? For a while, the different Khans all floundered for order. Some yelled, others sat and contemplated, and Cadmus smiled mischievously as he formulated a plan.

Khan, freaking out mostly, rushed to the front and stood in front of The Great Khan's banner. She bellowed for attention, flustered as she was. She had no idea what she was doing, but she had to do something or everything was going straight to hell. "a vote!" she yelled, "vote for a new one!"

The Khans just looked at each other in a bit of confusion, and some small sort of realization. Cadmus, missing little time, immediately nominated their peacekeeper, Khan herself. This was followed almost immediately by the Khan of the Vanguard. Khan was stunned. She didn't expect anyone to vote for her, let alone the dragon that had lead to her losing an eye. Another eternity passed before the Enclave's three consuls agreed and jumped on the bandwagon, but it would be another two days of grueling waiting and enormous stress before the Brotherhood's listener decided to approve as well.

And so there was a new Great Khan, where Khan earned the name her mentor had given her all those years ago. Now she realized why he had taken her in and why he trained her and why he let her hatch her plans with August. The last few days of the summit were a whirlwind for the freshly elected Great Khan. She knew barely enough to get through the process. She had observed what she needed, but that doesn't mean she was all that good at it. She had wished she had paid more attention when her mentor was teaching her about tact.

It took almost a week for Khan to get the glimmers of her bearings. She started to get things sorted. She started to be able to follow everything that was happening. She was starting dialogues and finishing them. She could do it! And then she thought about it one night while trying to sleep. Now that she was The Great Khan, she could have any servant serve her that she wanted. It was disrespectful to refuse such a request. And so, Khan requested that August tend directly to her needs. The face on August's master's face was priceless to Khan. It was equal measure surprise and defeat.

When the summit was over, and Khan managed to sleep more than thirty minutes at a time, she got to doing what she does best, training. She got to training August in her personal time rather than in secret. The previous Great Khan seemed pretty happy with it all. He had wanted Khan to handle it herself, to cut her own path through the dark. And, as Khan realized, she had. Khan took that with some stride. She wasn't yet fully comfortable with the whole leadership thing, and she wouldn't for some time yet, but she felt like she could survive.

Her sparring with August was her stress relief during this time. He was strong and he was clever, and he didn't treat her like something that could explode at any time. She wasn't treated like a dragon for a while. She was treated with too much formality and she wasn't accustomed to it. August was different. He was familiar, and he was great. Khan announced a great tourney a year after she became Great Khan. A sort of championship where warriors from all over the Legion and beyond can come and fight for the title of champion. August was victorious in the end, and he became Khan's champion. His new title released him from servitude and into the ranks of the Legion's armies.

Khan talked to Cadmus at one point. Cadmus had felt terrible after seeing what had happened to Khan because of him. That whole event changed him. He stopped believing in the rules for the sake of having rules, and started to believe in rules for the sake of dragons. That was popular in the Core where lots of dragons were unhappy with the many oppressive laws that had been built on for years. The new Cadmus and the new Great Khan got along rather well.

Khan, when he discovered the engagement between the Vanguardian monarch Brennus and one of her very own Legionnaires, organized the gifting of many flowers, items of food, and also kittens to the Vanguardian embassy. Eleri, the new monarch of the Vanguard, left ahead of Brennus who still needed to attend to some business in the summits, and Khan lended many soldiers to the hunt for those responsible for an attack on Eleri's caravan on the way.

To this day, Khan continues to advocate for changes the horde that the previous Great Khan never managed. She fought for better treatment of prisoners and for better representation and protection for minority groups in the horde. She sought to improve the lives of those near the bottom of the Legion, and, so far, it is working. She is supported by the other masses, and she is supported within her own. Crime rates are lower. Border aggressions are decreased. Infrastructure is improving. Literacy continues to grow. Trade is improving due to improved stability across the board.

There are even claims that the Khan might have children soon, but her companionship with August is seen with some wariness by some. There are fears that she will reach too far and destroy the horde even.

The Lost Legion, to the north, has also posed a risk in recent times. The Last Khan kept poor relations with his kin, but Khan might have a better chance at bringing peace between the divided Legion. After all, the Lost Legion's Khan may respond better to a fairer face.

The Great Khan is ambitious, but can she bring her ambition to bare? It would appear that she can, at least for the time being.
