Biography

Subject #0

The Glass Womb

The coatl's first memories are of looking through glass at a strange warped space filled with leaning crystals, bent tables, crooked selves and twisted instruments all cast over in a reddish haze. This was her view of Sahko's Lab, through a curved glass window in her tank. From this view she could watch Sahko and his assistant at work. She could listen to them speak—their voices floated to her in low, deep, and distorted tones.

This was her life for a very long time—watching the world swimming and shimmering outside the glass, doing little and wanting little. Then a new creature came into view of her window. He was lithe, and his colors were dull. His voice was deeper and softer than the voices of the other two. This was Sovri, and after his two brief visits, her world changed dramatically.

Subject #0 was the control group for one of Sahko's experiments. Unknown to her there were five other dragons in tanks just like hers. Infact, they were all adjacent to each other but separated by walls. Sahko's intention had been a full line of thirteen, one for each element plus Subject #0, but the entire project was shut done before he could reach that goal. Each dragon in the project had been hatched inside their own environmental containment and control unit (ECCU). Each—aside from Subject #0—had been fused with an extraction of essence stolen from Sovri. Sahko had managed to get ahold of the initial sample with the unwitting help of Victoria. When Sovri learned of this he ordered the immediate discontinuation of the project and removed Victoria from his service.

Repurposed

Sovri oversaw the end of the project personally. The tanks of all the dragons except for Subject #0 were drained and the occupants removed. Subjects #4 was the only survivor; the others were so ruined by the corruption that Sahko infused them with that they were unable to withstand the environment outside their tanks.

Subject #0 had not been infused like the others had, she had merely been born inside the tank, and lived there. She held none of Sovri's secrets, so he was not interested in her, and allowed Sahko to keep her. A small consolation to the mad arcanist for the loss of his ambitious project.

Sahko turned his attention to the concentration and purification of plague elemental essences. This was almost definitionally an impossible kind of task, as it was the nature of plague to shift and change and adapt and assimilate, so the idea of a purity of plague was a curious set of theories, but he had in Subject #0 a dragon who had been completely isolated for the entirety of its life and development, so it seemed a good fit for testing some of his new ideas.

Inspiration

Subject #0 took very well to Sahko's tests. She could feel herself becoming stronger, and the confines of the ECCU rapidly felt too small, even though she had not physically grown very much. The sound of the dull vibrations in the tank from the pumps and from the other devices in Sahko's lab were drowned out by a different sound, a heartbeat, but Zero did not think it was her own. That heartbeat so large and grand and vital. Her own came to match it and grew stronger as Sahko learned more, with each new iteration and refinement of his work—with each improvement to magical alignments and each tweak to the complex formulae he used for the composition of the fluids in Subject #0's tank.

The Heartbeat tugged at Zero, she could feel it in the fluid of her tank, in the air outside, in the stones all below her. She needed to find it. She needed to reach it, touch it, have it become her own heart.

Escape

Sahko's lab is not insecure. He does not think Subject #0 freed herself, but he has no suspects for who might have released her. It was not Corrosion, and not the usual suspect Amanita, for the dark fae had never shown any interest at all in Zero. Something had to have done it, however, slipped past the wards and traps and alarms... because the tank was not broken out of. It was drained, orderly, and the access panel opened and set neatly to one side.

The rest of the chamber was absolute chaos. Subject #0 had tripped the alarms on the way out, and when Sahko rushed there he was met with a wild tangle of foul growth as if someone had transported a section of the wandering contagion right into the room. Great tendrils and roots of hungry, ruined flesh covered the floor and tables and all his instruments. It had grown into the very stone, burrowing down and rending apart tiles and bricks. It attacked him viciously when approached. Pools of noxious vile fluid had settled into all the cracks and become their own breeding ground for terrible afflictions. It took a full week to reclaim the area, though Sahko did not destroy the growth or clean the room. He only secured it and modified the room for new research.

There was never any other sign of Subject #0 in the lab. Sahko has many possible theories. Perhaps upon leaving the ECCU she had exploded into raw plague growth and that is all that remains of her now. Perhaps the growth was merely to conceal and distract from a more stealthy getaway, and she was led out safely by whoever unsealed the ECCU.

Whatever the case, Subject #0 is gone from him now, and there is still so much work left to do. She was only the beginning. A prototype of a prototype. A first draft.

Outside

Zero does not herself know who or what came to her and let her out of her prison (for it had come to feel like a prison). She remembers only the rush of power leaving her, tearing out of her to spread, grow, consume, and thrive.

She lay upon the corrupt ground at the edge of the Wyrmwound. She did not sleep, but she lie there and dreamed anyway. The heartbeat was the heart of the Scarred Wasteland itself. She could feel the pulse of life in under and around her. Each and every living thing of this land also each and every other thing. It devoured itself and all else as it spread ever outward. A single super-organism made of plants and animals which only on their surface looked and seemed like a biome of individuals. A system designed to refine itself over time, a creature which like her, pressed against its confines and sought freedom from its prison. She could feel it all the way out to the edge of the Wandering Contagion.

Zero does not know how long the lie there. Hours or days. Minutes or decades. She rose and wandered the Scarred Wasteland with her heart as the heart of the land itself. She did not know to what ends she would wonder, for the Scarred Wasteland itself did not know, it knew only to grow and press out at its borders and become stronger.
