Biography

41993644.png     Augury the Cold Shoulder
about to freeze the tears on my face

Theme: Rise Up
━━ story ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
The Skydancer was young, much younger than Augury, but very pretty for her simplicity. “It’s nice to meet you.” She gave a brief nod and hurried away.

“Thanks.” Augury spoke up so Switch could still hear her. “You just recently inherited the place?” she asked, squinting at the shored-up sheds and a well-used fire pit.

Switch stopped her frantic bustle and snapped to look at her. “How’d you know?”

Augury smiled. “I inherited my mother’s ability to cut through the fog and see what’s probably most obvious.” That was a simple way of putting it. “She was a soothsayer. Sort of like an oracle, but… not.”

Switch smiled and went about her apparently very important business. “But you didn’t inherit her position in the clan?”

“Oh, I did. But who would want that?” Augury hoped it wouldn’t be too on-the-nose, but she continued anyway. “Always busy, never have enough time or talent to do it all.” Not that Switch didn’t appear talented… just overwhelmed. “So I left.”

“Hm.” It didn’t take a soothsayer to recognize that Switch didn’t approve of that course of action. But Augury was used to that kind of thing.

The only difference was that Switch didn’t say anything, and that was more annoying and disconcerting than Augury gave credit for. “What?”

“Nothing!” It clearly wasn’t nothing, but she moved on quickly. “Well, if you think you’re up for it, I’d definitely like to hire a Nature dragon for the garden. I’m more an explorer, so I don’t enjoy it as much.”

“Sounds like a deal.”

The northernmost regions of Nature territory can at times look not dissimilar to Ice territory. Augury was hatched there, on one of her mother’s short sabatacles away from her clan. A perpetually-exhausted soothsayer, Augury didn’t feel like her mother gave her much time or attention. Her father was usually busy, as well, though gentle and attentive as could be, so Augury spent most of her time exploring on her own. When it was time for Augury to begin to step into her role as soothsayer in her mother’s footsteps, she left. She’d seen what the work did to her mother, an didn’t want the same to happen to her.

Augury wandered a bit, looking both for her Charge (though she wasn’t quite on her Search yet) and for a place to put down roots━as the Nature dragons like to say. She found employment at the Estate of Escape just in time. Not for her, but for Switch, the dragon that hired her to watch her gardens. She’d just taken over the job from her parents, who’d decided to travel. Even though Augury and Switch couldn’t have been more different, they became fast friends. Augury found a place for her roots. As a bonus, Augury’s already found her Charge. Switch isn’t sure how she feels about that.

Taking over the garden, Augury turned the place into a blooming paradise in very little time. Even though the Steppes is an arid place, Augury was soon growing bushels more than they needed and selling the excess. Nearby gardeners and farmers, though, would roll their eyes. Being a Nature dragon in their profession is cheating a little bit. Augury might agree, but she has always warned her neighbors of early frost. She also offers her abilities to the Tempest Chase, the nomadic clan that sometimes uses the Estate as a place to stay between large jobs.

As a Nature dragon, Augury is interested primarily in the growth of things. This includes herself, even though many in her life might question her direction of growth. Switch has certainly been an influence on her, causing her to question whether she really did the right thing in leaving her former clan. Something in her says yes, because Switch is clearly worthy. Maybe one day, she thinks, she’ll bring Switch to her former clan to show her the sights. Maybe she’ll like it there.

As Augury was leaving home, her father gave her a parting gift: Nyen the gustvol. Though he looks delicate, Nyen is a rough-and-tumble gustvul, to the point Augury was at one point almost more nocturnal than diurnal to keep him occupied. Nyen now loves living on the Estate, with all its smaller creatures for him to chase.

Cliff Lion Switch is Augury’s employer, complement, best friend. Switch the thought to Augury’s action. To Augury, Switch is the necessary step-back appraisal that most situations involving others requires. Even though, as a soothsayer of a kind, she ought to have some sort of insight into draconic motive, she often is too focused on herself to see it. As it is, Switch is a typical Skydancer, and seems to know what Augury’s thinking before even Augury knows it. Perhaps she knows Augury’s constant conflict with herself, perhaps she does. Whatever the case, she knows that Augury would always be there for her. Switch will do the same.

Even though Augury has no intention of leaving the Estate (because Switch has no intention of leaving), she has to admit a certain sadness when she watches the Tempest Chase leave. It means Anani will be leaving with them. Anani is, like Switch, thoughtful, but he’s much more adventurous. After all, chasing down probably-dangerous non-corporeal beings as he does requires a little crazy. He also loves to help Augury tend her tea garden that she probably planted just for him. Of course, Anani is also everything Augury didn’t want. Hard to put down roots when he’s always on the move. Wind dragons are that way.

━━ notes ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
» in honor of her old clan, Augury took the surname Autumnhearth.
»
» Augury did hold on to a bit of her soothsayer training, but she mostly uses it to predict growing conditions like rain and cold snaps.
