The old Guardian had led the clan for a long time. He had answered plenty of difficult questions from clanmates, but today’s query stumped him. It was not a particularly tricky question — rather, it had an unusual source....

“Clan Father, can you tell me about the Search?”

Donner peered down. The hatchling before him was about the size of one of his craggy toes — a Tundra, all fluff and round edges. The eyes that peered up at Donner, however, were very keen indeed.

“Why do you want to know about the Search, young Rain? It’s arduous and lonely....Not something a Tundra boy like yourself should bother with.” Donner made it sound uninteresting, but he wasn’t sure it would work. This child had always been a bit strange: rougher than the other Tundras, more inclined to fight. Asking about the Search, about choosing weapons and armor, finding clients to protect...

Rainulfus — Rain for short — came from a clan of warriors. In the distant past, they’d been a ragtag gang of mercenaries; now they were fighters of the highest caliber, regularly contracted to guard important, powerful dragons. Children born into the clan began combat training at a young age, and it was common for these hatchlings to be eager, even passionate, about their calling....Whether that was a blessing or a curse depended on the child in question.

Is the Search only for Guardians, Clan Father? I have...” Rain paused. He seemed hesitant — but his stubborn expression indicated that he wasn’t done talking yet. And sure enough, he concluded, “I think I have the same feeling that Guardians do. I want to go away...to find someone to fight for!”

“We don’t find clients, young Rain. They find us,” Donner chided, but not unkindly. “Nonetheless, I know what you mean. We’ve had young warriors leave the clan for similar reasons....You wouldn’t be the first.”

Rain began his training a few days later. He was younger than most of his classmates, but old Donner had seen the resolve on his face, the determination in his violet eyes. It was no good telling this child to hold back because of his age. He would leave when he felt like it, and no one would be able to dissuade him, so it was best that he start learning to protect himself now.

~ ~ ~
Rainulfus eventually came of age and left the clan. As expected, the warrior’s life was a difficult one, full of conflict and hostility even outside of battle. It must be said that Rain wasn’t the easiest dragon to get along with. He was seen as moody and, frankly, a bit odd. Most Tundras preferred to stay in groups, but Rain always held himself apart and was likelier to strike out on his own.

He was not completely unlikeable, however. His drive to find someone to protect led him to become a great explorer and fierce fighter. There were dragons out there who could afford his services — and see past his surly exterior.

Rainulfus, huh? Is that your name?”

“It is,” he answered. Rain’s new employer was larger, but the way he stood — hunched shoulders, slumped wings — made him seem a lot smaller. His smile was sincere, but hesitant — there was a lot of warmth within him; he just wasn’t sure how it would be received.

Even though they’d just started working together, Rain suddenly felt very protective towards his new client. “I understand it can be difficult to pronounce. You can call me ‘Rain’ for short.”

“Ah...It’s no trouble. But, um, your nickname is also very nice. So I’ll use that. Since you said it’s OK. My name is pretty long, too. Call me ‘Richie’ instead.”

His name was Richemanus, and unlike Rain, he had been born into royalty, raised to assume kingship of his clan. It had never happened — Rain wasn’t surprised to learn that the reason was because Richie was considered timid and weak-willed. His father had exiled him in disgust; he had received a stipend, but aside from that, he was on his own.

Hiring a guard — in this case, Rain — was one of the first things he’d done soon after leaving his kingdom. Rain was fully prepared for an arrogant, entitled client; he’d had those by the score and knew how to deal with them. It was true that Richie’s personality sometimes left a lot to be desired. He’d been raised in luxury and struggled to understand the world he’d been forced into. Rain admired his spirit, though: Now that Richie had been released from his princely duties, he was determined to make his own way. Unlikely though it seemed, Rain saw something of himself in this pampered former prince.

When Rain’s guard contract ended some months later, Richie asked if he was interested in renewing it. Rain certainly was. He had grown fond of this earnest Tundra — despite his quirks, Richie was a friendly and considerate employer. Other clients had frequently reminded Rain of his place; Richie was still trying to find his own place, and Rain had been lucky enough to be along for the journey. In fact, it was safe to say he wanted the journey to last a little longer....

“Do you have a goal, Richie?”

“No, not really. I’m still sort of muddling along....This ‘real-world’ business is hard, you know? It’s tough figuring out...well, everything.”

“Yes,” Rain answered with a smile, “I know.”

Relief shone on Richie’s face as his guard signed the contract. As Rain handed it back to him, their paws brushed — magic sparkled upon their wrists ever so briefly. Richie’s eyes widened when he noticed this. He looked at Rain bashfully, almost fearfully, but the guard had already turned away, ready to take on the world on behalf of his dearest companion.
