Biography
Myrtle lived in the bygone age of kingdoms and dynasties, serving as a soothsayer in a prominent royal court. The Bogsneak was known around Sornieth for never getting a prediction wrong, and whenever she spoke, everyone, even the king, stopped to listen. She lived a comfortable life for decades in the court's service, relishing the admiration and renown her gift of foresight earned her.
Yet all good things must come to an end. One fateful day, Myrtle was summoned once again to her royal court. The king demanded she tell him of the conquests and prosperity that was soon to come to his kingdom. His anticipation to hear the kingdom's fortune grew as the Bogsneak obliged and entered into a trance. But when she came to her senses armed with knowledge of the future: Myrtle only had this to say:
"Your kingdom will collapse. War will ravage your lands and murder your subjects. Those who remain will starve and suffer. Soon after, you yourself will be disgraced and exiled from this court. All you have strived to build will fall around you.
That is all I have to say."
The king refused to believe Myrtle's prediction. Outraged, he ordered her to be taken away and executed. His royal guard, despite her attempts to escape, bound her wings, chained her, and tied her mouth shut. They dragged a struggling Myrtle to a pit of spikes as the court looked on. The last things the soothsayer felt were the rush of the air around her, a pit of dread in her stomach, and anger at the king who'd condemned her. All she'd done was speak the truth.
Then, nothing.
...
But although Myrtle no longer lives, she still persists as a spirit. She has fully embraced her ghostly form and lost all sense of who she was in life. Those journeying through the Scarred Wasteland in the witching hours often report feeling an eerily chill wind surround them, followed by a quiet, haunting voice whispering prophecies of death and misfortune. Some have even claimed to see a dim outline of a rotting, decayed Bogsneak lit by ethereal lanterns wrap itself around an unfortunate traveler to steal away their life force.
Avoid contact with Myrtle at all costs. None who attempt to speak with her have ever left alive.
