When children born of Ius and Os hatch from their shells, they seem, to all outward appearances, like weak and frail hatchlings not long for life. They all die on the third day of their birth, are buried and subsequently crawl from their graves two days later, looking very little like the tiny, sick half-corpses that were lowered in. There is no mourning, no solemn ceremony. If the Plaguebringer sees fit to grant them life, they will return much stronger than before. Of course, not all hatchlings emerge from the dirt. |

Of her siblings, she is the strangest. The last to crawl from her grave, her rise gave her nest-clan some cause for concern. Her scales were still heavy with rot and thick with decay. While she emerged fairly healthy and quite youthful, there was something distinctly wrong with the stiff way in which she carried herself and how her jaw moved when she talked. It was almost as if she had to force her mouth to shape the words, otherwise her tongue, her jaws, her lips would not obey. There was no other word for it, the stench was unmistakable. She reeked of death. It is a subtle smell, a taint in her aura, but it is there nonetheless. Something followed Saevus when she returned from the dead. |
