INTRODUCTION
Memento mori (Latin: "remember that you have to die") is the medieval Latin Christian theory and practice of reflection on mortality, especially as a means of considering the vanity of earthly life and the transient nature of all earthly goods and pursuits.

Memento mori has been an important part of ascetic disciplines as a means of perfecting the character by cultivating detachment and other virtues, and by turning the attention towards the immortality of the soul and the afterlife.

LORE - ACANTHUS
Conspiracies were Acanthus' jam. She grew up thinking the world was out to get her, and as she came of age, her conspiracy theories became more refined, more complex, more ... convoluted. They began to involve the magistrates and high-up's of the flights. She began to tell other dragons she was being watched, being assessed. That the Icewarden was appraising her for a particular mission, and she had to prove she could pass.

She delved into the history books and lore scrolls, learning everything she could about the Icewarden, and that bled into learning about the other deities. First Icewarden's allies, and then his enemies. She grew paranoid that those who wanted to hurt the Icewarden would do so through her, because she was now a conduit to the deity, himself. If she felt pain, surely the Icewarden would feel it, too?

It's difficult to say if Acanthus was correct or not. But bad luck did find her. Perhaps she learned something that was supposed to stay unknown. Perhaps she uncovered what was supposed to remain hidden.

The last thing she remembered was a book. She could remember it as clear as anything.

Then she was alone, and freezing. Her pearl shattered, her heart broken, her sense of self in pieces.

A voice tickled the back of her mind. "Do you want to live?" it asked, written inside the pages of every book she'd read, every scroll she'd unravelled.

"Yes," she whispered out loud, and tasted dirt. Earth and freezing water coated her mouth.

"What price would you pay?"

"Anything," she answered with conviction, and the world caved in around her.

She woke up inside her own grave.

The traumatized pearlcatcher dug her way out of the earth, and found her grave-marker read, "Good riddance." She left the Southern Icefield the day she died, and has been on the run since.

This curse would be traced down her lineage. All Acanthus' children were destined to die, like any dragon. But they would be given a second chance. It was up to the children if they would accept the bargain.

Ex: Acanthus blacked out the memory of her death- she came back to life and agreed to the bargain because she's a conspiracy theorist and knew there was more. Now her obsession is finding out who killed her and why. What did she know that got her killed? what did she find out?

On the other hand, her white rot deer familiar whispers her stories of what happened, but Acanthus doesn't know/can't know what's real or what's not. The deer tells her one day it was an accident, the next day it was murder, the third it was a magic spell gone awry. The deer tells her what happened in the world while she was dead, buried in the frozen ground- but did it really happen.
