Gaius The shy leader

Gaius has never been one to take responsabilities. Not because he disliked them, but just because he never really trusted himself to do so. He always felt like his heart beated too slow to make important decisions, that it was too fragile to give orders. From the many stories he heard, the leaders were always fierce and assertive, they always seemed to know what to do, which is a reality really far from his own. Gaius has always been the kind of dragon that follows, that listens, which reflected on most of his behaviours. He talks little and usually slowly, and much prefers to stand by and follow the tide than swimming against it. Traits completely different from his brother, Caesar.

In fact, if someone asked him, he would've said that his sibling was much more suitable to take the reins than him, but after a handful of events, he inevitably found himself on the current situation: being in charge of founding a new, and hopefully strong, clan. It's a stressful situation, but, if he were to be honest, it does great good on him. He is helping others, giving hope to many dragons that had actually lost it years ago; he's learning, he's exploring... He's growing.

By being exposed to the world, by being pushed away from his comfort zone, he's also maturing a lot - even if he didnt notice that yet.

Be it destiny or just a coincidence, in one of his travels he found Onessa, a mysterious lady from Wind that, like him, searched for peace within her heart. It didn't take much before they became friends, and, one day, she asked him permission to share her story, to which he undoubtly obliged... From that moment ownwards, that day changed his life completely.

She told him, during that time, that she was once part of a big clan; that it saw prosperity and a big future, but that- due to a rebel and their distorced mindset - it also fell into chaos and despair. That she, alongside the council she was part of , was obligated to take decisions she didnt want to; all in order to save what they had managed to build. She told him a tale, and at each word she shared, he could feel the weight of many regrets, but also of a warm nostalgia. As she revived those memories, her voice never once changed from its usual calm self, and the descriptions were so lively he could almost feel himself living the moment alongside her. He could see the streets that once were so lively, being turned into ruins... He could almost hear the joyful songs Onessas' clan used to sing being changed into sad, hopeless, lullabies.

And so, she explained, that after many fights, the mentioned rebel and their followers were one day constrained. They were all sent to clan's army and were judged for their crimes as they should have. However, she never told him what happened to them - and to this day he hasnt pressed the subject - and after a small pause she told him that after the terrible incidents they did manage to rebuild the town, but, as expected, it never returned to be just the way it once was. The residents became incredibly suspicious of each other, and it was many months before the market and the festivities returned.

Eventually, the council had decided that, for the best of the population, it would need to be disbanded, and so it happened. And following that decision, what was a clan then changed to a merchant-driven , neutral pitstop, on which each dragon took care of their own belongings. Many -like her and the rest of the council- left it to travel their own paths, and it was soon after that when her story crossed with Gaius' own.

He listened the story till the end, and after he thanked for the infomation, a last question kept pushing on the back of his mind. Though a bit shyly, he asked why she had decided to do open herself so suddenly. With a smile, she answered simply "Nothing is ever coincidental, windsinger has wrote this meeting for some reason. And something on my heart told me that I had to tell you my story."

After many other encounters, Gaius and Onessa grew closer. Eventually, they'd spend an entire day just idly chatting, laughing and trading more personal stories. With closeness came trust, and after a suggestion from the wind dragon they started to travel together. Where she was experienced, he was curious, and their journey turned to be one filled with learning. Their informal classes were always interesting, with the older dragon telling him about her beliefs, about society and whatever else she felt like sharing.

They walked and flew through many different places, through many different dragon and beastkin alike. During these years, they also offered help for those who needed, pausing their objectives on behalf of others. Not much after even, they rencountered some of Onessa's old friends, Dione and Erilys that also joined on the journey. Gaius was immediately taken under the wings of the new two dragons as well, and received even more advice and knowledge.

More years flew by, and each of his mentors, decided one day to reunite, tto have a serious talk. To Gaius' surprise, they finally admitted that on him they all have seen great potential, that he could succeed where they failed.
