For as long as Darryn could remember, he heard the word “prodigy” whispered by those around him. He was gifted. Magic came as naturally to him as breathing. The warriors of the clan were pleased, Darryn would make a powerful battle mage one day. He was proud of his skills, but youth may easily forget caution, and one day he learned the true danger of meddling with powerful magics.

Darryn once discovered an old book of spells. His thirst for knowledge unquenchable, he quickly turned to the section on ice magic. There was something strange about the inner workings of a spell, and he was eager to test it, so with neither help nor supervision, he cast it. Swirls of ice crystallized around him, with tiny rainbow freckles of light scattered into the air. He felt fingers of frost brush against his own silver scales. It was at once beautiful and alien, as if Winter itself danced before his eyes with a life of its own. He felt more magic pulsing around and through him than he ever thought could exist in a single place at once. Then, between one breath and the next, he felt something like a snap that came from everywhere. In the brief moment of calm that followed, he did not think to be afraid. Then the rippling magic around him rebounded, flexing and writhing in all directions. The tendrils of ice in the air whipped around him, with swirls of searing pain following their path across his scales. He heard the wind howling, then everything went dark. He was unconscious before he hit the floor.

Darryn later learned he was covered in two feet of snow by the time they found him. It took three mages to get the spell back under control, and by then, the damage was already done. Scars twisted along Darryn’s body, coated in permanent swirls of ice that extended all the way to his face. The accident left him completely blind.

In place of his sight, Darryn learned to navigate by reading ambient magic in the air. He felt deservedly proud of the feat, and could read a room as well as any Skydancer. That early mishap failed to scare him away from ice magic. Far from it, in fact Darryn called ice his “second element.”

He fulfilled every expectation set before him and remains a powerful, if reserved, battle mage occasionally called on by his clan to fight. The rest of his time is spent researching and devising spells with his familiar, the elusive Taji, or advising the clan.
