B I O G R A P H Y

______ They call her the All-Mother. They say she created the stars. They say she was created by the gods themselves and that she is older even than them. There are a hundred, a thousand such rumors, but the dragon they are about refuses to speak of them. Her name is Xina, and all that anybody knows for sure is that she is the mother of a small nation. She has only had three children of her own body, two of whom are exalted, but she is the adoptive mother for her entire clan, a group of over seventy dragons. These dragons all look up to and respect her, although none of them know much at all about her.

Xina is a calm, motherly presence, always there with a kind word and a gentle touch. She loves all her children and does not discriminate between her adoptive and biological children. Everyone in her clan looks up to her and treats her as a mother, regardless of whether they have another mother in their life.

The only dragon who Xina can relax around is her mate Cosmo. To her clan she is a mysterious, motherly figure. To Cosmo and Cosmo alone, she is just a dragon. She is forever grateful to him for understanding that sometimes she just needs to rest. He loves her dearly and tries to tell her that she does not need to thank him for something so simple, but she never listens. “For my clan, I must be brave. It is only with you that I may be scared,” she says, and he never knows how to respond.

Xina has raised generations of hatchlings to their adulthood, has watched babies grow and change and live and die, and still she watches, and cares, and loves. On the third day after the full moon of each month, Xina disappears. Nobody knows where she goes on these days, and she has made Cosmo promise never to follow her or allow anyone else to do so. On these days, the clan waits in a strange kind of unease, somehow expecting that this time, this time of all times, she will not come back. And then she does, and the clan breathes again.

Xina does not speak often, and when she does, her voice is slow and gentle as the waves. When she does speak, it is usually a simple kind remark to a struggling dragon, or a bit of advice to an uncertain one. It is considered a great honor to be spoken to by the All-Mother, and those who receive this honor will cherish the memory always.

There is much speculation on Xina’s origins, on her life, on her use of the third day after the full moon. When asked about these things, Xina just smiles and moves along. There have been a few dragons, often visitors, who tried to force her to explain. These folk were quickly escorted out of the clan and instructed not to come back. The clan will not tolerate a threat to their beloved mother, nor are they certain they want answers to the riddle of her existence. It is amusing to speculate, but in the end she is simply Xina, simply mother, and that is enough.
