Biography
Octavius The Ruby Homunculus One day, an otherwise normal alchemical brew became something unique when Aquilius's agol knocked a bracelet and ring into the bubbling cauldron. To the alchemist's great astonishment, two golden Fae-like creatures formed in the pot - one set with sparkling rubies, the other with aquamarines. The Skydancer had heard of such things before - Jewelry Box Fae, they were called - but as far as he knew, they formed through spontaneous enchantment. He scoured the archives for any information about them, but as far as he could find, there was no record of a Jewelry Box Fae having ever been created through alchemy. |
Over the next few days, he observed Octavius and Olcinia, comparing them to records of known examples. Though they did not speak, they seemed far more intelligent and animated than most Jewelry Box Fae, even for golds. For a while, Aquilius attempted to replicate the experiment, to no avail, but that turned out to be no obstacle for the creation of additional Fae, as the two even proved to be capable of bearing offspring of their own. Though they were metal and stone rather than flesh and blood, Aquilius decided that the terms he had previously used to describe them were insufficient, placing them at a level only barely surpassing enchanted objects. He had come to regard them almost as his adoptive children, and dubbed them "homunculi," or artificial dragons. He even taught them to read and write, and other skills they soon put to use assisting him in the lab. Octavius particularly loves writing, and takes every opportunity to put quill to paper - not so much to record thoughts as simply to make letters appear. He has labeled every jar, pot, and rack of ingredients in the lab, and takes very detailed notes on every experiment. When not occupied with a specific task, he often records transcripts of anything he hears. Aquilius often has to take the inkwell away from him to keep him from wasting it all, although he doesn't seem to mind and will settle down without fuss when prevented from writing. |
