Riverside was an adult when she nearly drowned. In her clan, a pearlcatcher who died or came close to it in water has been rejected by the ocean, and therefore is to be rejected by the clan. She left with nothing but her pearl, and ever since, has been terrified to so much as set a toe in water. She does not want the water spirits, who have already rejected her, to take her life as well as her home. She was under attack by a small pack of traveling mirrors, who broke both her hind legs, when she was rescued by Plunder and Pyre. Riverside was abhorred to find a pearlcatcher who not only had gotten rid of her pearl, but willingly bonded with an imperial. Pyre shrugged off Riverside's horror and insisted she come to the lair until her legs recovered. Riverside spent many weeks unable to walk, trying to convince Pyre to break her bond with Plunder and stay with Burst, which eventually wore down Pyre's patience. Lonely and feeling unwelcome, Riverside took up painting while she was unable to walk, eventually becoming very good at it by the time her legs had recovered under Burst's care. The quiet and caring coatl took this time to convince Riverside to change her mind about his mates. She also realized that she was an outcast now, and needed to pick her battles. She apologized to both Plunder and Pyre, and while they will likely never be friends, they maintain a peaceful truce. Riverside painted the walls of their lair section as an apology, and this quickly spread to the rest of the cave. Now most of the lair is painted with colors in every shade, depicting the dragons who live there or have done in the past, those who have fallen, and the beauty of the world around them. Riverside became good friends with Volatile, the skydancer with little self-control. He fell in love with her quickly, and the two hatched a few nests together, but Riverside refuses to bond with him. She also grew very close with Driftwood, who wanted to help her overcome her fear of the water. Like with Volatile, she hatched a few nests, but when he wanted to have a more serious relationship she refused. This caused Driftwood to break off his ties with her to pursue a relationship with Enchant, and Riverside does not know how to deal with this. She struggles with figuring out why she does not want a romantic relationship, and though Roots has tried many times to tell that there is a word for that, she refuses to listen. |
