Külm Veri the Betrayed

Hidden Warrior
Mate: Astronomer

EAgQOYH.gif
Slime Risen

Kulm is a dragon made of Ooze. Her semi-stiff rubbery skeleton is encased in thick, translucent slime, and her wings are made of cells of a more robust filmy material. Aside from the alchemical ring which helps her maintain a 'solid' form, she cannot wear clothing, as her body is corrosive, and most clothes are dissolved and incorporated into her after a few hours. Her "mate" is the Astronomer, a pearlcatcher formed from a coalescence of arcane energy.

She was "created" by Annabel, who, after discovering the betrayal of one of the clan's honored warriors set about trying to find a way to resurrect that warrior and return her home. The warrior's remains were unable to be recovered, but Anna's tutor, Sahko, had a number of various biological and arcane samples taken from her. Anna took these, and several dragon eggs from Sahko's collection, and started work.

After a few experiments and two failed attempts, Anna created a new body for Kulm, and successfully bound the warrior's wandering soul to it. However, the body rapidly deteriorated, almost like melting ice. Flesh and bone all became like jelly, but with help from Putridus, she created an alchemical ring which gave the former dragon a more solid shape - though not the one she once had. Since bogsneaks were dragons of alchemy, that was the most stable shape the ring could give her.

Sahko, when he learned of the project was immediately keen on claiming Kulm as one of his projects. This was one of the reasons Kulm left the clan before, so Annabel has helped to hide her from him while she regains her strength. For this reason, few others in the clan know of her return.

Even from her hiding place, she works to protect the clan from threats and serves as a secret soldier. She spends most of her time in the tunnels below the Scarwind Keep and patrolling the routes between there and the Bonestrewn Crest of the Rotrock Rim. The threat she is most vigilant about, however, is one within the clan itself.
The Stolen Child

Kulm was born a Snapper. The only parent she ever knew was Majka. Her egg was stolen from her parents by a member of a secretive Order loyal to the Icewarden. Why the theft occurred is something Kulm may never know, as the unknown thief was forced to hide the egg quickly where none could find it. They chose one of the sacred sites protected by their order, the one below the Rotrock Rim, where they thought none would ever look and the evidence of their crime would remain forever hidden. This Prison was the one Ayna had been tasked with defending from the Clan of Singing Blood.

The thief was unaware that the site had been compromised and the egg was soon discovered in the thawing prison by Majka, who took it as her own and hatched it.

Afraid of the Dark

Kulm grew quickly into a powerful and formidable warrior. Raised by a summoner of demons inside a prison filled with horrors most would scarcely dare imagine. She grew up in the melting ice chambers, where light filled the corridors and almost every surface had a maddening, glassy sheen. When she grew, she fashioned a set of armor in the style of this deep region to help conceal her and make her harder to attack in combat due to the befuddling reflections.

Some members of the clan who saw her fight subscribed to her a supernatural strength. None of them ever knew of the nightmares she suffered. Dreams of a thing waiting and watching in the dark. Always the same, seeking watching eyes, a gaze that could devour all it turned to, hidden away below the world. They plagued her childhood, but slowly she purged them with training and the Sinflayer's guidance. They were the troubled visions of a child. Or so she convinced herself.

The Shade's Witness

The armor-clad black snapper, Kulm, lie flat on her belly among the bones and dry reeds, wishing it had been someone else who was successful in the hunt. She squinted at the dark shape which was at that moment settled between two large rocks. In the distance she could see the line of dark and twisted trees which stood as ancient bastions along the border of the Scarred Wasteland and the Shadowbinder's beguiling domain.

The thing vanished from sight, but she was quite certain that it was still there, or somewhere nearby. The reeds rippled in the wind and the spiral scout Yuseph inched towards her. "There is another scouting party, they should be close by, if they have followed their orders and kept pace. I will go to them, and tell them-"

"And leave me here?" Kulm wasn't able to mask the distress in her voice.

"Well, yes. One of us has to stay to keep track of it, and once the others know, we can send the fastest - well, me, to go back and…"

Kulm had stopped listening. The dark thing was moving again, slowly, up a spire of broken bone and fleshy overgrowth, till it rested, wrapped around the very top. She could see it searching for something. Wide eye floating within the inscrutable bounds of its body. That eye scanned the skies. This was a nightmare. Literally. In the flurry of events following its escape she had been atlast able to put a name to the hideous thing which had long haunted her dreams. An ever present Witness, watching the world unfold and peering into her very soul. She could fight dragon or beast surely and easily, but this thing was neither. Perhaps Sovri sent her to follow it, and be killed by it, to punish her mother for letting the Eyebite escape.

The Departure

Kulm remained with her clan for a little while following the recapture of the terrible Eyebite, long enough to ensure that it was well and truly contained. As the days went on she came to the realization that she could not stay. She had faced it once and won, but being near it was a terrible ordeal. Distance helped, and she took every opportunity she could to get away from home. Long patrols, escorting caravans to distant lands. It eased her mind.

Sahko more and more wanted her to stay. She did not trust the mad glinting of his many eyes when he looked at her, and she had seen the disaster his work often wrought.

She had to leave the Clan of Singing Blood, the clan that had raised her and given her strength, that she had always fought for. When her mate found his name disgraced and discredited, she jumped at the oppertunity for them to leave and make a life for themselves elsewhere. When she left, she took a set of chimes from the Thawed Depths so that wherever she ended up she would have a bit of singing blood still with her.

The Mistakes of Qurulan

The Skydancer Qurulan was Kulm's mate, though not always. Q joined the Clan of Singing Blood as a colleague of Verthandi Wyrdworm, with whom he had shared correspondence for a long time. He eventually took Wyrdworm as his mate, for a while, though she could never love him, as her heart belonged to Yuseph, one of her own creations.

While he found her work as a Construct Artisan intriguing, Q was himself far more interested in machines. He was an eccentric and high-energy skydancer. He founded the Machine Faction with the help of Výrobce Strojů, an Imperial that he had hired as an assistant and tutor.

Q was instrumental during the Eyebite Incident. His mechanical creations offered a significant edge against the powerful and magic-oriented shamans of the Bonewood Refuge. It was during this time that he met and became close to Kulm.

In spite of his long and loyal service to the clan and the value of his advancements, he found himself targeted and disgraced by his own son and apprentice, Iejir. He could not know that what his son did was for Q's own sake and that it was Q's greed and ambition which was the elder dragon's disgrace.

With no reason to stay, Q and Kulm left and went to stay with Q's allies, stopping for a time with Marun of the Noli Timere Carnival before making their way to the Shifting Expanse.

The Betrayal

It is not entirely known what happened. All that is known for sure is that Qurulan and Kulm perished in the desert. A few short and hurried letters arrived far too late into the claws of those in the Clan of Singing Blood. A powerful warrior and a genius inventor were no easy prey. Some pointed the blame at Marun, and none ever heard from them or any of the Carnival again after that. There was also evidence of a trap laid by Q's supposed allies. The Bloodsinger's warriors descended upon the shifting expanse and found nothing but sand and sorrow.

Kulm, though she has returned, does not speak of the matter. Not yet. Perhaps someday she will be able to shrug off the shame of her failure and the loss of her mate, but not yet.
