Life Among Spirits (5,445 words / TW: abusive relationship) Deep in the wilder regions of Sornieth, the gods are but shadowy presences, and spirits and magic hold sway. It is here that Naddaha first touches the edges of her power and learns to live in the in-between -- where half-breeds like herself, born from both dragon and spirit, must survive.

HISTORY
When he was nearly grown, Naddaha's father was abducted from his village by a malevolent spirit. He was taken down to her underwater lair, where he sired several children on her. Naddaha was the only one to survive. Born from the union of mortal and spirit, she spent most of her childhood on the move, for her father feared that they would encounter her mother again. Eventually, Naddaha was apprenticed to Gudrun, himself an elemental half-breed. From him she learned more about her otherworldly heritage, the magic she might someday inherit, and how to sustain herself by devouring other spirits.

Naddaha soon realized that she despised capturing lesser elementals and draining life from them. After her mentor's death, she struck out on her own. She soon determined that she could form alliances with greater elementals, binding them to her life-force so that she could draw upon them, while making sure they got the sustenance they needed from magic and lesser spirits. She first allied herself with Ulan, a rain spirit. Other elementals soon followed.

Naddaha met the Disillusionists when they inadvertently captured Ulan while testing a magical vessel. The weather-wrangler soon arrived to rescue her ward, and she realized she could offer her services to the Disillusionists in exchange for board, lodging, and research opportunities. She remains with the clan today, where she runs a spirit-wrangling service. She also continues to specialize in weather manipulation, employing her partnered spirits to complete these jobs.

CHARACTER
Naddaha came into a world that was both mysterious and frightening. Her birth was not gentle, though her father worked hard to shield her from his own fears while she was a child. He was largely successful, and when Naddaha came under Gudrun's care, she was better-adjusted than most half-breeds her age, more curious than frightened about the magic blooming inside of her.

Gudrun was a drake with a rather dry wit, and much of his humor rubbed off on Naddaha as the years passed. The young Bogsneak approached her studies with scientific curiosity; she was meticulous about documenting her findings as accurately as possible. She was able to detach herself from most of her lessons, though there was one crucial exception: Naddaha discovered that she was squeamish about devouring lesser elementals. This persists even today, though it can be safely said that she is no longer interested in getting rid of this quirk, as she owes most of her success to it.

Gudrun encouraged independence, and Naddaha's father grew increasingly unstable as the years passed. Thus by the time she reached adulthood, she was largely self-reliant. Today she manages most of her own work; it has taken her some time to get used to delegating tasks to her assistant. She has her own office in the Disillusionists' Commercial Wing, though she is not always present there -- she often travels far afield to help other dragons sort out weather and elemental problems.

She has a strict code of ethics (thanks largely to her own background) and only binds spirits who are willing to work with her. She gets along with all of the elementals currently attached to her and is always careful to keep them happy and healthy. They, in turn, have a great deal of respect for her and usually obey her commands.

In contrast, "normal" dragons tend to be leery of Naddaha. Most of them describe themselves as feeling "off-balance" when they have to deal with her, not just because of her wry wit but also because of the sense of otherness that clings to her. She is more sinuous and serpentine than other Bogsneaks and the air around her is always cold -- traits inherited from her predatory mother. To disguise this, she usually wears concealing clothes. She is not pushy about interacting with other dragons, though those who take the time to befriend her will gain a loyal, charitable ally. She is also rather fond of children, most of whom seem to be oblivious to her otherworldly traits, and will often share stories and scientific facts with them.

RELATIONSHIPS
48252261p.png Resham | Assistant
Himself a bound spirit, Resham is Naddaha's reluctant assistant, in the sense that he doesn't really have anywhere else to go. He is wary of her, but works with her in the hope that she'll one day find a way to release him from the false body he's tethered to. Naddaha seems to regard him with pity, often treating him more like an unruly pupil than an employee.
43083933p.png Ulan | Bound Spirit
The first elemental bound by Naddaha, a rain spirit. Ulan is rather simple-minded and pleasant and seems to enjoy following Naddaha around. He is the easiest of the bound spirits to work with, though he can be a little overeager at times.
46124360p.png Tempest | Bound Spirit
As turbulent as her namesake, Tempest prefers to stay in her vessel. This suits Naddaha just fine, for the spiritologist sometimes isn't sure how tractable the storm spirit is, and Tempest is usually deployed as a last resort in only the direst situations.
47059431p.png Rime | Bound Spirit
A frost spirit whose mischief tries Naddaha's patience at times. Rime does have more respect for Naddaha than she does for most other beings, however, and she usually pays attention to any commands her mistress gives her. Usually.
35434041p.png Auryon | Business Associate
Some of Naddaha's work calls for special materials, and so she has built a business relationship with Auryon of Nyx Coven. In addition to being a supplier of metal, the Ridgeback's shadier connections are useful to Naddaha, who sometimes finds herself in need of more unusual ingredients for her work.
27212879p.png Animus | Research Associate
After being referred by Jubilant, Naddaha consulted Animus on the possibility of being able to break Resham's curse. Animus hasn't yet found a solution, but he and Naddaha still frequently consult each other on matters of magic and spirits.

STATS & ABILITIES
combat1-5.png
Naddaha doesn't fare well in contests of strength and will fight only if backed into a corner. She prefers to rely on her elemental friends, all of whom pack quite a punch, but without them her options are extremely limited. She will flee if the option presents itself, or try guile and persuasion.
_______________________________________
vitality1-6.png
Her elemental heritage grants her immunity to many conditions. Due to her restricted diet, however, she isn't as energetic as most other half-breeds, and she can be downright lazy. She gives the impression of a great anaconda: patient, languorous, and generally slow-moving.
_______________________________________
magic1-10.png
Naddaha learned a lot not only from Gudrun, but also from other tutors she briefly encountered in her youth. She mostly channels her magic into fettering her elementals, directing them according to how they are most needed. She also knows many other spells that can be used on elementals: summoning, binding, sustaining, and banishing. When she finds herself low on strength, she can use a wide variety of items to augment her powers or perform the necessary rituals.
_______________________________________
intelligence1-9.png
Keenly intelligent, curious and inquiring. Naddaha was an eager student as a child, and she continues to learn and improve even today. In addition to her specialties (spirits and weather magic), she loves learning about many other topics. Favorites include travel, biology, pottery, and myths and legends. She will also readily share her knowledge with those who ask.
_______________________________________
charisma1-5.png
Many dragons can instinctively tell that Naddaha isn't quite normal; they are consequently leery of her. She finds it difficult to make friends because of this. In contrast, spirits of whatever sort are drawn to her and will readily approach her. Whether they agree to work with her or not is an entirely different matter.
_______________________________________
luck1-6.png
A hard-working dragon who is quick to take advantage of her occasional strokes of luck. Life in the wilds has taught Naddaha to be cautious, and she hardly goes anywhere without an arsenal of useful items in addition to the spirits she already has. Her work can be dangerous, but her careful preparation also shields her from the worst of the damage.
