Biography

This lil one was a gift from Mail on the 8th July 2018. I made him a permababy, gave him stripes, and named him after the Le Brea tar pits in LA!

BASIC LORE: Brea was found partially submerged in tar in the boggier parts of the Labyrinth by Auratus. The Pearlcatcher took the corpse to Belladonna, feeling sorry that the world had lost one so young. The Bogsneak Witch brought him back to life, but it wasn't a nice existence. Brea couldn't walk or talk, and eating was very difficult and...confusing. Himalaya and Technetium banded together with books from Ceres' library and a WHOLE LOT OF MATERIALS to create artifical limbs and pseudo-biological processes, helping the hatchling regain most of his autonomy. Even so, he requires regular visits to Himalaya for physiotherapy. Technetium also sees him regularly for tune ups to his prosthetic legs, belly and tail tip.

Since being resurrected, Brea is a quiet child for the most part. He can talk but only in simple sentences, referring to himself in the 3rd person. He is rather curious, wandering all over the place yet staying as far away from where Auratus found him as possible. He's a cripple but that doesn't stop him! He's developed a 'sixth sense' from his time in the great beyond - he can find things; objects, dragons and places long forgotten. His small, never-growing body is good for getting into smaller spaces if his craft calls for it. Currently relearning what is and isn't food, thanks to Thetis' kind and patient nature and a lot of visits to Tech. Brea likes to eat rocks, even though he isn't supposed to. Brea has formed a close bond with PROJECT 3MP3R0R, often playing with the android since Thetis is their assigned Caregiver. He has given them the nickname 'Empie'.

Quote:
Brea:

his name means DARKNESS, and SOFTNESS, and SUCK;
WEEPING, SOLITUDE, DESPERATION, and WOE--
but also SEARCHING, and that is the most familiar.

the most ancient of races crossed the universe in search of a
better life-- their children will not remember the journey,
but today’s children grow up faster, brighter, sooner-- some
too soon.
he is one.
he wakes.

the child is small, sickly, but lord can he RUN.
his legs are not his own, his organs struggle, but his MIND,
his SOUL, his soul is in his metal legs, his iron mind,
and he uses it like no one else does.
eyes as big as saucers, he’s there one second and gone the next,
devouring everything like an old man starved.
sometimes he forgets to breathe and topples over like a domino,
but bounces back up again immediately,
and darts off in search of new adventure.

he rarely talks but who needs to talk when you can FLY.
bright as a penny, sharp as a whistle, he speaks up only
to shock the world.
procuring a bottle, or jewel or part
thought lost forever, with a beaming smile, he receives
a pat on the head before departing, never in one place for too long.
perhaps he remembers the pit, a little,
and its shadow follows his footsteps.
maybe he remembers the smell of the tar, and it haunts him
when he sleeps.
or maybe he remembers and does not care--
surely the ones he sniffs out don’t mind being brought back to town
by a cripple-- where they could not find their way, he knows all ways,
and nothing escapes his gaze.

he dreams of FIRE, and STICKING, and HOLES.
but he wakes and his body is ALIVE, ALIVE
and the dreams fade to mist in its wake.

"You smell vaguely burnt, but it's fading, giving way to a magical smell. I can't pinpoint it, but it's there. It's a good smell. The world holds many wonders and you can live them, so do so!"

La Brea Tar Pits
Location: Hancock Park, Los Angeles
Coordinates: 34°03′46″N 118°21′22″W

California Historical Landmark
Official name: Hancock Park La Brea
Reference no: 170

U.S. National Natural Landmark
Designated: 1964

The La Brea Tar Pits are a group of tar pits around which Hancock Park was formed in urban Los Angeles. Natural asphalt (also called asphaltum, bitumen, pitch or tar—brea in Spanish) has seeped up from the ground in this area for tens of thousands of years. The tar is often covered with dust, leaves, or water. Over many centuries, the tar preserved the bones of trapped animals. The George C. Page Museum is dedicated to researching the tar pits and displaying specimens from the animals that died there. The La Brea Tar Pits are a registered National Natural Landmark.

Tar pits are composed of heavy oil fractions called gilsonite, which seeped from the Earth as oil. In Hancock Park, crude oil seeps up along the 6th Street Fault from the Salt Lake Oil Field, which underlies much of the Fairfax District north of the park. The oil reaches the surface and forms pools at several locations in the park, becoming asphalt as the lighter fractions of the petroleum biodegrade or evaporate.

This seepage has been happening for tens of thousands of years. From time to time, the asphalt would form a deposit thick enough to trap animals, and the surface would be covered with layers of water, dust, or leaves. Animals would wander in, become trapped, and eventually die. Predators would enter to eat the trapped animals and also become stuck. As the bones of dead animals sink into the asphalt, it soaks into them, turning them a dark-brown or black color. Lighter fractions of petroleum evaporate from the asphalt, leaving a more solid substance, which encases the bones.
