Every member of the clan has seen Shyner, but only Augustine, Garland, and Driftwood have actually spoken to him. Plunder fought him once, and ended up with a mess of scars and a mouthful of green leaves for his trouble. Garland believes him to be a spirit of the dark forest, trying to decide if the clan means his home any harm. Driftwood believes Shyner is just another lost dragon, thus far too fearful to join the clan, especially due to Plunder's less than warm welcome. Which of them is correct is yet to be seen. Augustine doesn't care what he is, he only wants Shyner to stop being afraid of them. There is no agreement as to what he is, either. Garland describes a creature that stands upright like a wildclaw, the space where wings should be filled by several ethereal grasping hands. Driftwood saw a cloak of leaves and tattered fabric with metallic horns rising from a sleek green head. Plunder only remembers there being a lot of leaves, and a hide harder than the steel Electra forges, that he could not puncture with his teeth. Shyner watches them. He does not know them, though part of him wants to. He is afraid, but his fear of them is nothing beside his fear of something else. Shyner holds his older brother in check-though his grip slips every day. Hand is his antithesis-Shyner can only exist in places where peace and order reign, and Hand brings chaos wherever he exists. They were born out of the shade, the two of them, opposing forces clumsily melded in dragon-like forms-but not dragons. Shyner had hoped that being near a settlement, with rules followed and enforced, and families united and at peace, would increase his power and allow him to hold his brother back for a bit longer. It’s not working out so well, though. Hand’s attempts at escape grow more vicious every day, and several times he has managed to break free for a few hours to roam the forest. Shyner’s younger half-sister Pax has spent most of her life following her brothers, but after meeting Vela by chance in the forest, the half-dragon quickly fell in love. Shyner wishes he could pretend to disapprove, but seeing his sister happy gives him all the more desire to control Hand, and protect his sister's chosen mate. He likes the rest of the clan, too-Garland is sweet and charming, Driftwood witty and kind, Plunder powerful and determined to protect, and Augustine-oh, Augustine. The magic that radiates off of Shyner makes it difficult for him to go unnoticed, especially in a place to magic-saturated as the heart of the Tangled Wood. Mordred, a former scribe of the Shadowbinder herself, paid Shyner a 'friendly visit', mostly to let him know that he and his mate Heaven knew he was there, and warn him against causing their clan any harm. Shyner assured him that he meant no harm, and has not seen him again. And it's not just the highly magical denizens of the deep woods clan that have noticed him-Shyner's also been approached by a young kitsune named Soda, who wanted to see what strange font of magic had appeared in his forest. Other creatures of the Shadowbinder's entourage must know that he's here, too-he's heard their laughter and seen the purple wisps that go in their wake when they spy on him. He also has been approached multiple times by Acerbus, the guardian of the local river. The fragile sprite sought him out to beg him to leave before Hand breaks free, to avoid the chaos force being unleashed in his home. Shyner refused. He still believes that the strength he draws from the order and peace in the clan is enough for him to keep Hand in check. He’s also grown a bit attached to one of the clan members. Augustine, the only formally trained healer in the clan, has been searching for Shyner since he came to the Tangled Wood. Shyner thinks that he’s beautiful, a feeling he had never felt toward any creature. His determination is surprising to Shyner, especially since he calls for him with some semblance of familiarity. Shyner is fairly sure that Hand, in his brief escapes, has met and spoken with Augustine, and confused the two for the same entity, as most mortal dragons do. Hand can’t mean Augustine or his clan anything but harm, and Shyner is well aware of that. |
