보탑 속에 들은 진귀한 보물 모두를 중생들에게 골고루 나눠주며 복덕을 주는 천왕으로 알려져 있다. 3개의 눈을 가졌다는 고대 인도 시바신의 화신.
오른손에는 용을 쥐고 있으며 왼손에는 용의 입에서 꺼낸 여의주를 쥐고 있다. 갑옷으로 단단히 무장하고 몸은 붉은색을 띄고 있으며 오른 팔꿈치를 세워 깃대나 삼지창을 잡고 있고 왼손 위에는 탑을 받들고 있다.
고대인도어인 산스크리트어로는 “Virupaksha”라고 하며, 비루파(विरू)는 귀, 여러가지 색이라는 뜻이고, 악쉬(पाक्ष)는 눈 또는 뿌리라는 뜻으로 여러가지 색의 눈 또는 뿌리라는 뜻이다(광목). 이는 크고 넓은 눈으로 수미산의 서방 국토를 바르게 지키고 중생을 도와주는 천왕이라는 뜻이다.
한문으로는 추목(醜目) · 악안(惡眼). 인간세계의 선과 악을 살펴 죄 지은 자를 벌로써 다스리고 반성하게 하는 천왕이다.
그 부하로는 여러 종류의 용(龍)과 부단나(富單那) 등이 있다. 부단나는 냄새나는 귀신 · 아귀를 말하는데, 때로는 열병을 앓게 한다. 용은 하늘에서 구름 · 비 · 천둥 등을 부린다.
