⥇ she brews a lot of tea and hates small talk, so much that she almost never shows up for any of the enclave's meetings. ⥇ she turned a dry bit of sand into a blooming garden. ⥇ stuff to get: |

A swirl of colour and noise cascaded from the gates, and Tealeaf suppressed a shudder. The marketplace would never be her favourite location, but at the height of summer it became almost intolerable. The sun was relentless, the chatter of the crowd incessant, and at every turn she was bustled and bumped by a flitting Fae or clumsy Snapper, all in some dreadful hurry to get here or there. On any other day, she would just stay home. But not today. Dawn had not yet truly broken, but her hope that she would find the streets quieter and cooler was quickly proved unfounded. Although the sun hadn't reached its full strength, the warmth of dragon bodies and cookfires was more than enough to make the heat uncomfortable. Avoiding every eye, the slim Skydancer threaded her way through the throng to find the stalls she was looking for. Everywhere she looked was an assault on her senses. Canopies in every colour lined the walkways, hung with gaudy trinkets and fluttering banners. Several meat stands surrounded a wide firepit, and the stink of charred flesh wafted in the humid air. Eager sellers shrieked from all directions, in varied tongues and dialects, pressing samples into outstretched claws and laughing brightly in the face of hagglers. Some time later, Tealeaf worked her way back through the mass of market-goers to find a clear space to take off. Sunlight dappled her feathers as she spread her wings and heaved herself airborne, weighed down by the large sack clutched in her hind-claws. The quiet of the sky was like a poultice on a fresh wound. Far below, the babble receded into nothingness as she soared across the plains towards the mountains, and on to the coast. The sun above the sea cast creeping shadows over Sornieth, and the rosy peaks of her home beckoned. Few of her clanmates were awake when she arrived back. Many of the other Enclave-dwellers preferred the night, or the evening, and as an early-riser she was unusual. Once inside her cave, she busied herself lighting the fire and preparing the kettle, then stretched out on the grass to enjoy the morning. Late in the day, she stirred, gathering up the sack of goods from the marketplace and eyeing the setting sun. It would be time soon. She took out her purchases one by one, and began to consider the best way to arrange them. Some of the hatchlings drifted lazily towards her corner of the lair, drawn by the interesting things she was setting out around her glade. They watched, wide-eyed, as she hung flowers and lit lamps, then when the sun had almost begun to dip behind the crystalline peaks, settled down among the bamboo to wait. A young Coatl nestled into Tealeaf's side and began to make a string of daisies. Another sniffed at the herb garden, and the Skydancer pointed him to the mint leaves, which he eagerly plucked and began to chew. As the daylight faded, a slender shadow passed over the garden, followed by a silent shape landing in the grass. Moth only ever came in the twilight. "What's this?" The Mirror dragon grinned at the Skydancer as she made her way to the little group, careful not to tread on any trailing daisies. "Are you having a party?" "I suppose," Tealeaf replied lazily, beckoning Moth to join her. "I knew you'd be here today." The Mirror dragon made a non-committal gesture, flexing her wings and lowering herself to the grass. It was a year to the day since Moth had found her way to the Starfall Isles, and Tealeaf had found her wandering the Reaches all alone. She didn't like to think of that day very much, since it reminded her of what came before. Still, the memory had made her come, as she always did when thoughts of her previous home threatened to overwhelm her. "Shhh," the Skydancer whispered, as the hatchlings beside them started to ask questions. "Watch the lights." The lanterns she had bought were glowing softly in the almost-dark, and the air was heavy with a sweet, honeyed smell. As the sun arced below the distant mountains, the glade was engulfed in darkness, broken by the flickering oil-lamps strung in the trees. As if in response to a signal, there was a sudden stirring and fluttering, and a hundred tiny winged forms streamed from the bushes. In the light cast by the new lanterns, their wings shone like wisps of smoke, pale and fragile. "Oh!" Moth watched rapturously as her namesakes dipped and weaved, drawn to the lights, and soon began to gather around the dragons too. The two hatchlings giggled as the creatures tickled their noses. Tealeaf settled a hand-made flower crown above Moth's crest, and snaked her long neck over the Mirror's own. The two watched, entwined, as the moths danced in the dying light. |
