Born of two important - and unnerving - members of Amberspire, Chalice was expected to live up to the expectations of her mother and father, guardian to Lady Pepper, and Seer of Souls, respectively. She did take after her mother, but not in the way Cruor had quietly hoped. Chalice loved to explore and find trinkets to collect - skulls, teeth, and other refuse from dead animals, in particular. She loved sneaking into Talo's tannery and attempting to put her own works together with the many high-quality tools the guardian had collected over time, but lacked the lifetime of practice her mother had, and tended to injure herself and/or ruin whatever she was working with instead. Talo was considerate of her daughter's somewhat misguided passions, being reminded of herself when she was little. Cruor, however, was frustrated in her careless and lackadaisical ways - particularly because he sensed the same ability within his daughter that he possessed. She was a soul seer. She would be able to perfectly read motive, intent, and honesty from other dragons with training. But she didn't want training. She didn't want to follow in his footsteps and have a chance at a glorious and coveted life. The older Chalice grew, the further she grew apart from her father, to the point that she simply never saw him again in spite of living in the same castle. She became a bitter young woman, throwing herself into her work as an artist specializing in taxidermy and bone sculpture. Talo, in spite of her busy schedule as Pepper's guard, supported her kid as best she could, but Chalice drifted away from her as well, simply taking her tools and heading out into the forest to work. She told herself that she was better off working alone, without distraction. But a part of her knew she was focusing so desperately on her art to attempt to stifle the loneliness that she felt. |
