Biography
Memento mori (Latin: "remember that you have to die") is the medieval Latin Christian theory and practice of reflection on mortality, especially as a means of considering the vanity of earthly life and the transient nature of all earthly goods and pursuits. Memento mori has been an important part of ascetic disciplines as a means of perfecting the character by cultivating detachment and other virtues, and by turning the attention towards the immortality of the soul and the afterlife. This curse would be traced down his lineage. All Vigil's children were destined to die, like any dragon. But they would be given a second chance. It was up to the children if they would accept the bargain. In her first life, Midnight was always afraid. She went by a different name then, one that has faded into dust with the passing of time. She knew her parents' stories by heart, knew what chance she would have when she passed into the abyss. The problem was, she didn't want to die. What if her familiar was something bad? What if it possessed her? What if it demanded something of her that she could not fulfill? Worst of all, what if it didn't show up to bargain at all? So she didn't take chances. She risked nothing, planned everything in meticulous detail. She made no errors, had no regrets. That was when she was sent to an allied clan, that of the Dawnchasers. She was to be an ambassador at first, but decided that interacting with other dragons was too risky and was to be off limits. Too afraid to leave, she stayed there and never left her house. It was no way to live, but she was safe and that was all that mattered. At least, that's what she thought. No matter what preparations we make, how untouchable we think we are, how little we risk, the flood always comes anyways. And when it arrives, it wrecks everything in its path. Midnight's flood came in the form of an emperor. The creature had been ravaging the Sunbeam Ruins unchecked for quite some time now. Nobody had thought it would come this close to the Tangled Woods. That assumption evaporated when it showed up without warning and burned the city down. She was in her house when it caught flame, sobbed when she felt her life seeping away. The part of death that was most shocking was not the quiet or the cold, but rather the surety that came with it. For once Midnight was unafraid, for she knew. She knew that the spirit was waiting for her, and she knew that whatever path it led her down had to be better than the one she had just walked. She was finally ready. "I would ask you if you would like to live, but I sense we both know the answer to that already," a cool voice echoed through the void. "I'll do anything," she begged. "Just don't leave me here alone to die." "Anything? I suppose we can work with that." In her second life, Midnight was a force to be reckoned with. She opened her eyes to see her self inflicted prison crumbled to ashes around her, the embers still warm. She crawled from the rubble and found the rest of the clan. Nobody noticed her presence, just as nobody had noticed she hadn't been found among the survivors. It wasn't until they arrived in the Shifting Expanse and started over that she began to make a name for herself. She became one of the best thieves in the place with her silent steps and quick eyes. She laid a clutch with a demon. She reached heights that she'd never even thought were possible when all she wanted to do was stay hidden. All because of the thing that she had been afraid of the entire time. Her familiar, ambition.

"The future is unknowable. To believe otherwise is to exclude the possibility of free will."
