Speaking to the dead sounds like such a beautiful gift. It allows a dragon to reach into the other side, and speak to those that have been long gone for many years. It can bring closure to a mourning family, and it can even solve mysterious that ended unfortunately. However, Carter hasn't considered his power a gift in a long, long time.

No one ever wants to be the weird hatchling. You know, the one that doesn't have any friends, and the one that the parents all coddle. Unfortunately, someone always has to be that hatchling, and in this life, Carter drew the short stick. From a young age he was hearing voices that no one else could. They kept him up at night, they hurt his head, and they didn't allow him to concentrate on anything. For a long time, no one believed him. They thought it was just an over active imagination that he would grow out of. However, when he finally reached the age of training, he was continuously failing out of pure mental and physical exhaustion.

It was then that his parents took him to see the witch Evanora. Carter spent a lot of involuntary time with Evanora, and and reluctantly became a sort of apprentice to her. While all of his peers were training to be soldiers or merchants, Carter was reaching out to the other side by the instruction of someone many considered crazy. He must admit that she helped him. With her guidance he was able to push down the mindless babbling of the dead, but they still interrupted him from time to time when they thought they had something important to say.
