The Star-Crossed Daughter: (3,949 words) Raised as an assassin, Mesarthim's rise to power is cut short when she discovers her Charge and is expelled from her order. After encountering some travelers, she decides to accompany them and make a new life for herself...at least until she finds a way to return to her old one.

Ramifications: (3,723 words) Mesarthim decides that breaking her old clan's enchantments on her should be straightforward: reverse the breed change, reverse the curse. A trip to Byzmara, however, shows her that things may not be as simple as she believes.

HISTORY
The Benetnash, an all-female band of spies and assassins, are based in the Shifting Expanse, and Mesarthim was born as one of them. She started life as a Guardian and quickly rose through the ranks, to the point that she was expected to succeed the Chapter Mother. In order to do this, she was expected to pass a series of tests under the watchful eyes of the order's leaders -- but she failed due to a moment's distraction, when she realized one of these judges was meant to be her Charge.

Failure, as it is for many assassins, was unacceptable for the Benetnash, but the circumstances of Mesarthim's failure were unusual enough that they decided to grant her more clemency. Instead of executing her, they changed her from a Guardian into a Fae. Her memories of all she'd learned with the Benetnash were wiped clean. And an enchantment was cast upon her: Anytime she spoke of the Benetnash and their deeds, she would be met with complete disbelief.

Mesarthim was then abandoned in the desert. She was soon found by Origenes and his fellow explorers. Believing her to have been cast out due to a disagreement with her clan, they took her with them back to the Sunbeam Ruins.

Mesarthim was determined to regain her shape and return to the Benetnash. But their enchantments held true, and nobody would believe her. Other dragons instead concluded that her memories had been altered (rather than erased), or that the breed change cast upon her had addled her mind, or both. None of her stories were taken seriously. Despite having found work with the Disillusionists as an exalt recruiter and having a few other misadventures since then, she remains intent on returning to her life as an assassin, and continues to search for ways to break her former clan's threefold curse.

CHARACTER
Mesarthim was proud to be one of the Benetnash, and she worked hard to hone her skills and secure the much-coveted post of Chapter Mother, which would have put her in charge of a whole division of assassins. Ruthless, efficient, and unfailingly obedient, she progressed quickly and was determined to pass the trials that had been set for her. Her failure and subsequent exile were crushing blows, not just to her ego but also to everything she had worked for. She could not bring herself to hate her order, or to completely let go of all that she had learned from them. Other dragons might have embraced the leniency shown to them and gone on to live normal lives; Mesarthim stubbornly refuses to accept this and still clings to her previous life as an assassin.

The Benetnash erased many of the skills connected to their order, including Mesarthim's knowledge of combat, assassination, stealth, navigation, weapons, poisons, and the languages and customs of the eleven Flights. She can recall once knowing these, but can no longer recall exact details (much as one might recall reading a book, without being able to remember character and location names). The curse could not, however, alter her personality. Cold and acerbic by nature, being cast out of her clan made Mesarthim even more disagreeable. She regards ordinary dragons and their daily lives with contempt and has an active dislike of Beastclans, and she seethes at having to work alongside both groups.

Her forced breed change and memory alterations have made her clumsy and unsure, however. She is not comfortable with being a Fae, and a further magical mishap resulted in her growing large ram's horns, which only add to her clumsiness. The gaps in her knowledge (or memories) are sometimes painfully obvious as well. These make her come across as klutzy and somewhat dimwitted, so her clan treats her with significantly more consideration than they might if they understood her true nature and objectives.

By now, she has learned to clamp down on the more objectionable aspects of her personality. She generally comes across as sullen and curt; she is close-mouthed and it's common for her to respond to questions in grunts or monosyllables. Despite (or because of) her keen dislike of other dragons, she is a good judge of physical ability and character. Her pithy assessments of other dragons' fighting potential and abilities were what netted her a job as an exalt recruiter.

Mesarthim prefers to spend her free time alone. Her determination to break the enchantments and return to the Benetnash has become an obsession, and she spends much of her time researching magic, particularly those connected with breed changes and memory alteration. She is convinced that being able to break the curse will prove her worthiness to the Benetnash again, and that she will be welcomed back into her order with open arms.

RELATIONSHIPS
44574157p.png Banditaccia | Supervisor
Though she is officially Mesarthim's supervisor, Banditaccia sometimes struggles to deal with the Fae's mercurial moods and sullen behavior. They are about the same age, but she tends to treat Mesarthim as a moody child. At work, she is the cheery half of the duo, and typically interviews exalt candidates whom Mesarthim has pointed out for training.

STATS & ABILITIES
combat1-0.png
Mesarthim was proud of her skills as an assassin, and was furious over how these were taken from her. She refuses to learn new techniques, reasoning that once the curse is broken, she will be a better fighter than any of her clanmates could be.
_______________________________________
vitality1-6.png
One gets the impression that Mesarthim does her work only because she has no other choice (which is exactly the case). She is not particularly active unless she acquires a goal, which she will pursue with near-manic speed and energy.
_______________________________________
magic1-2.png
The Benetnash taught Mesarthim plenty of useful magic, but like her combat skills, these were excised from her when she was banished from the order. The magic that remains to her is inherent to her Fae form. It is untried and unrefined, for she refuses to study under other trainers.
_______________________________________
intelligence1-6.png
Mesarthim is naturally intelligent and observant. She lost much of her knowledge, but remains fairly adept at judging other dragons' characters and abilities. She isn't interested in reacquiring the knowledge she once had, however, preferring instead to devote her time and limited resources to researching how to break her curse.
_______________________________________
charisma1-3.png
While she is capable of putting on a more civil front, Mesarthim dislikes other dragons as a general rule, and she doesn't really bother to hide it.
_______________________________________
luck1-4.png
Her getting exiled from the Benetnash rather than executed could be interpreted as good fortune, but she doesn't see it that way. Her prickly personality and dangerous obsessions might get her into trouble someday.
